Re: At last, really fast broadband, yay!

1080p is the only option for me. It's playing now in full HD on the TV via the Apple Tv and You Tube

Oh well, our Virgin connection here at home is crawling (probably because of local contention):

So I'm unlikely to get decent HD playback with that speed

Re: At last, really fast broadband, yay!

Ian, these are from Birmingham then Coventry, both about 50 miles. This is what I normally get as Virgin limit it to 10Mbps. If I paid more I could get 20 or 50 Mbps but I am happy with 10 for now as that is always the speed I get.

Reading Stephen's post gave me the idea to watch it on my iphone using my wifi connection and it played perfectly at 1080p.

Thanks Geoff. For some reason our Virgin connection this evening is crawling (it's the 20Mbs 'XL' service) at so I can't really judge the YouTube playback sensibly. Isn't technology frustrating?!

Just downloaded the Speedtest.net App for the iPad and it's showing I'm getting 15.9mbps, the upload as usual is a pathetic .71

Nope, I've power reset the modem and router and it's still under 3Mbps download. I'll try again early tomorrow morning when hopefully all the local heavy users will still be asleep.

What a difference a few hours makes:

                Last night:

                This morning:

The change in speed means the 1080p video we were all looking at last night now plays without any time-outs although I wouldn't say that the frame rate was particularly smooth.

It looks like already settled (?).
Just FYI I had no problem at all in viewing the video smoothly at 1080p.

BTW 1080p video is amazingly beautiful.

I'd be interested to know if anyone here can watch this normally at 1080p.

                    Ian
I can't even watch it at 720p as it is like freeze frame. Still jerky occasionally at 480p, works well at 360p. Didn't really expect anything else as speed generally 1.5 to 2.0 Mbps and very variable.

Re: At last, really fast broadband, yay!

My ISP tried some tweaks this afternoon, but it hasn't worked and now my basic speed test results are slipping, too, down from 8Mbs up and 38Mbs down, to around 6Mbs up and 22Mbs down. I must say that if they can't fix this, I may have to consider cancelling the contract because YouTube is very important for us.

Good news - the YouTube streaming of HD videos is MUCH better this morning, and the overall test speeds have improved also, although the upload speed is still only around 5Mbs compared to 8Mbs last week, but that's still almost 10x faster than the old service

Inspired by this thread I emailed our ISP this morning and mentioned to them the poor download speed updating my camera.

A call from them this afternoon saying they were going to refresh the line and for me to use www.speedtester.bt.com which produced the following speeds: Download 7150kbps and Upload 4666kbps.

                          Regards. Barr1e

Hi Barr1e - are you using a fibre (like BT Infinity or Virgin Media) service? In fact do you mind telling us which ISP you use and which service? 4666Kbps upload is very fast.

                              Hi Ian -

Demon Home Office. I think it must be cable as we don't have a BT box in the house with a green light. We are pretty close to the exchange as the crow flies.

It must be the tablets! Added one 6 too many to the upload figures. It should have read 466 up. Sorry, you must have wondered which planet I was on.
