Ian - BT at last were true to their word and the engineer duly arrived at about 8.45 am Monday 7th and plugged everything in again and checked the Internet an e-mail server could be accessed. He then did a speed check and showed me that I was getting 37.5Mbs download and 1.6Mbs upload which is not far off the maximum that they advertise. Yippee !! at long last.

No - a grumpy middle-aged bloke narked because he can't do his work properly because the Internet here today is up and down like a yoyo and even when it's up it's crawling

Ah - you went for the slower upload speed (2Mbs)? I went for a 10Mbs upload package (expecting about 6Mbs up and 27Mbs down here). But 37.5Mbs download speed is superb If you can access servers that can match that speed you can download 1GB files in less than 4 minutes! BBC iPlayer will be a doddle

Re: At last, really fast broadband, yay!

We have ordered BT Infinity and are scheduled to have it connected on Tuesday 22nd Feb, can't as we get such a slow connection I find we can't stream the iPlayer and Youtube has to be at 240p, otherwise it stops. Online gaming on the PS3 can be a nightmare too.

Gone for up tp 40Mbps download and 2 upload inc phone calls, did originally go for the next package up but can't see us downloading more than 40GB a month, so no need at present.

We should get 35Mbps according to them as the cabinet in very close to the house.

We get hardly any mobile signal here have to be in the window to make a mobile call, TV signal quite bad so use freesat (get switched over April though so should change)

I am getting this at the moment via Tiscali (now Talk Talk)

Don't suppose you know if the basic digital vault can be used as a webspace do you? I'm planning on setting up a website and wonder if I could use that to host it and point my domain to.

Sorry, I don't know. I'm actually using fast.co.uk rather than BT Infinity. The connections are the same, and installed by BT, but the services attached are most likely different. I suppose it's asking too much for a BT person to actually have enough knowledge to answer your question!

But basically, if your space has a fixed IP address, that's good. But usually you need to have a host with an OS (Linus or Windows Server), not just space. I'm less optimistic thinking about it - but good luck!

                      Ian

Update: pretty sure BT don't offer any web hosting space with their broadband products and neither, it looks like, do fast.co.uk, not that we are bothered as we have two dedicated servers in the US anyway

Our ADSL here at the office seems to be in sulky denial at being replace by FTTC next Wednesday. It's been up and down for most of the day

But only two more working days to go and I'll be greeting a BT engineer on Wednesday first thing next week...

Our box of equipment arrived today....really want to open it. But I would only be able to look at it and drool.

Had a spot of luck today, I got given a 12 month sub to http://www.creativemotiondesign.com/ today so I will be able to set up using that instead.

Had an automated phone call yesterday from BT asking if the scheduled day and time next week was still OK

I understand the BT engineer will bring the modem. We already have a compatible router, so not expecting anything else.

Way-hay! Can't wait for tomorrow and our connection!

I've been told we can expect around 6Mb up and 27Mb down, so I reckon we're a bit further away from the cabinet than you are
