The laptop is marginally slower anyway and the wireless performance marginally slower on top, but nothing to lose sleep over.

I uploaded a 320MB video file to YouTube earlier and it took less than 6 minutes, which is roughly a megabyte a second, or 8Mbs, which confirms the real world top end of my upload speed (YouTube obviously has a fat pipe into the UK!).

Good to see that Ian, as this is what I expect to be getting download wise via wireless

Re: At last, really fast broadband, yay!

If anything, the speed test measured performance has improved slightly since yesterday - 8Mbs up and 38 Mbs down.

Obviously as the global speed tests show, actual performance will vary depending on how far you are from the server you are connecting to.

Interestingly, for uploads, YouTube seems to let me exploit the full speed of the connection (probably because they have a high capacity connection in the UK) but I'm still getting time outs when viewing YouTube videos in HD.

I uploaded a 2 min 37 sec uncompressed 1080p video (320MB) to YouTube and it took about five and a half minutes, basically the upload rate was 8Mbs, so it took advantage of all the upload bandwidth I had.

YouTube re-processes the file and compresses it, so it should be much smaller than before. But trying to watch the same clip off YouTube clip involves lots of starts and stops as the buffer is caught up, which is rather disappointing when I have 38Mbs of download bandwidth.

It certainly has me scratching my head!

"Full" congratulations Ian. It's quite important in this i-net days to have comfortable access to it.

I was also thinking why the global speed as was indicated by the speed test was so slow. IMHO it can't be. As, if the speed is that low as shown, I would not lurk dpnow so often. Fortunately I think I get much comfortable connection here.

Just a coincidence but my personal i-net environment has also been improved tremendously. Just two weeks ago, I finally got an access to i-net at a place where no i-net of any kind was possible until then. That's the reason why you see me more often than before. I had to wait five years.
I do not have an access to TV yet here but hopefully it also improves soon.

The last but not the least. Important info is missing. Could you give us the link to the video you uploaded to youtube, please?!

The video I uploaded was a home video of the children's school play, and is not on public access. (I have no problem with our kids being on YouTube, but it's only fair to respect parents of their friends in case they aren't so relaxed).

But the problem I see can be demonstrated in other videos I have uploaded, see:

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AIGiZC3mjg"]Photokina 2010: Olympus talks about the future of Four Thirds and unveils a new compact - YouTube[/ame]

This plays faultlessly here at standard resolution but not at 720p HD resolution.

This plays faultlessly at 720p for me Ian, so you do seem to be having some poor performance issues with You Tube.

Interesting! It would seen that Virgin (your ISP) is plugged into YouTube better than my ISP. I will try at home too and pass this info onto my ISP.

Awfully sorry for the request for the link. I somehow imagined it must be photo related one.

About the Olympus presentation, I could smoothly and faultlessly view the video at 720p. It makes me more convinced that the global speed testing has some kind of flaw.

No need for an apology at all, it was just a handy large video file to upload - and you would not have know it was not public

This is good news that you can watch the HD content without problems. I'm now more convinced than ever that there is a fault with my ISP that can be fixed. I'm looking forward to their response!

Re: At last, really fast broadband, yay!

I must admit that the YouTube performance improved a bit this afternoon - I don't know if this is down to ongoing tweaking of the connection. I will be in touch with the ISP again tomorrow.

Here at home where we have an ostensibly slower Virgin connection (which also routes through a powerline network from the router downstairs to the modem upstairs) was able to watch the video in 720HD without interruption, and over wireless (my PC at the office is connected by cat-5 cable to the router.)

But I couldn't watch this smoothly at 1080p:

                        [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YW8p8JO2hQw"]beautiful nature scenery (1080p HD) - YouTube[/ame]

I'd be interested to know if anyone here can watch this normally at 1080p.

Ian, I am on Virgin Media with a 10Mbps maximum connection which is normally what I get when I test it. I can watch that clip at 1080p on full screen with no problems and no delay. (The pink bar was always well in front of the red bar so it was streaming faster than it was playing).

                          Regards,
                          Geoff.

I'm wondering if you would get a better representation of your broadband speed if you chose a closer host for the speed test?
