Hello Geoff, no not CD player although I can see why you suggested it.
This particular item would normally be located in a different room in the house to a CD player, it performs a particular task quickly, some are battery powered and some are not.

The item performs a function that involves other items, there are mechanical versions and electronic versions manufactured. This particular one is electronic.
