here's my animation from saturday evening. shots every 10 mins. some thin wispy cloud tended to destroy things a little towards the end so there's a distinct haze around the moon. quite amazed it stayed clear though!


what i like about this sequence is that you can see both the umbra (that's the dark shadow) and the penumbra quite clearly. during the eclipse, the penumbra is harder to appreciate at the time.

was using the magic drainpipe on a 2x convertor. the above was taken at F2.8, 200mm (by the time you factor in the 2x convertor and the digital crop, it works out at 640mm, and yes, the 2x convertor i have lets me use the lens wide open ). exposure was 1/2sec at ISO800. bit slow really as there is obvious movement. in retrospect, i should have upped the ISO a few notches, but wanted to retain some degree of control over the noise.

Wow! You guys really went all out! Stu & Dave, your shots are amazing, The animation a real treat! Well done to you all for braving the cold & allowing us to see what we missed! Last time I saw a lunar eclipse was in South Africa & it was amazing. Had a friend in Italy then that sent me pics from there & they were amazing too, but have lost contact with him unfortunately!
