Re: Lunar Challenge!
I am using a 300D attached to a telescope (scope is F5) I am using ISO 100 and between 1/60 and 1/125 shutter speeds and checking the histogram each shot. These are the speeds I used for the shots in my gallery I used 1/60 on a 500mm lens but that was not a full Moon so I would try around 1/100, also as the Moon goes into shadow you may have to slow the shutter down or up the ISO.
Good Luck!

Lunar Eclipse
Not a great result, but serves as a reasonable record of this evening's event:

I'm sure there are some better attempts than mine!

Re: Lunar Eclipse
Well, it's not as if there are many of us who can claim to have any real expertise in the field of photographing the moon, is it? Unless you do this kind of thing regularly, it tends to be a tad hit and missOriginally posted by Ian View PostNot a great result, but serves as a reasonable record of this evening's event:

It's funny, but no matter how many times I remind myself that the moon is a moving target and therefore a tripod / slow shutter combo is about as much use as a sunlounger in Siberia...........I still forget and end up using a tripod and a half second shutter..........d'oh
This one's the best of around 30 or so I took from a quiet field behind my house. Using the 1D Mk2 (the 5D isn't ideal for this kinda thing) and the 70-200mm f4L got me close enough, but an extender (or even a 300mm with an extender) would've helped. I should really polish up on the appropriate techniques for this but in fairness, these things only happen once in a blue moon. Blue moon.............. geddit?
I'll get my coat...

Oh - I'm impressed, BenOriginally posted by coupekid View PostHeres mine......Crikey thats starting to get chilly out there!

!
Nicely done - and presented. Mind you - are you sure you weren't pointing at Mars instead
Seriously - a very good effort. My excuse for my lacklustre result is that I completely forgot and had to rush things.
I ended up at ISO 800, f/4.5 and 1/20th second at an equivalent 400mm tele. How about you?
Tim's result is similar to mine, but he sensibly used a smaller moon artistically off-set in the frame.

Re: Lunar Eclipse
Heck, now I'm pretty sure there weren't that many moons up there when I was out in the field...
Nice work, Ben. You must've been out there a while, because my thirty or so minutes saw only a minor change in the appearance and colouring of the moon. My fingers were freezing and there were icicles hanging off my nose, so you must be blue...
The text is cool, although something makes me think of one of those pre-launch banners for a blockbuster Hollywood movie

Yeah, although admittedly I only had 260mm compared to your 400mmOriginally posted by Ian View Post

Y'know, I think I might do a bit of research on techniques for shooting the moon, because I've seen some stunningly sharp work on various sites and I'd like to be able to get a decent result on the rare occasions something like this takes place.

Cheers Ian and Tim!
I was pretty happy with the result.
The setting varied considerably, ISO 400, starting of at 1600th second.....right up to a full second, hence why the final shots are a little blurred. But to be honest, you could hardly see the moon through the view finder by this time.
I went and set up at 8:30ish, and took the final shot at about 11:15...and yes, I was freezing, but was in and out the house for a warm up, (and to watch Al Murrys Happy Hour.....hilarious!
Taken with your lense as well Ian

I would love to do some proper astrophotography. I have seen some great stuff around, I think a lot of the times they use motorized tripods to track the movement.
The text is a nice little plug in I found for Photoshop, its a Star Wars style one! I thought it was rather apt

Re: Lunar Challenge!
Brilliant idea and well executed Ben. I have to be honest and just looked through a pair of binoculars through the open front room window, even at 8x magnification it wasn't enourmous. I could have managed 364mm equiv. I suppose, but the prospect of standing out in the cold didn't really appeal.
