Winter is officially here! Sort of.....

I work at a ski shop and each year we host a "Rail Jam" in October to kick off the new season.

His name's Alfie (that's his name and his breed - whenever anyone asks what he is, I say "he's an Alfie" ). He's been with us for about 9 years now.

Some days he shows his age (he has a dodgy back leg and carries more weight than he should), but other days he acts like a puppy (this morning he saw a cat run across our path while out on our walk and he shot off like whippet!).

That's already a decent age for a dog. Never had a dog, though Julia's family have had dogs. We have cats because they can look after themselves. I can see us getting a dog later in life. But at the moment it wouldn't be fair on a dog if we took one on.

Alfie is mostly an "indoor and back garden" dog (hence his weight), but that's mainly because there are so few places around here to take him and that everyone else seems to own Staffordshires. They terrify the life out of me, so I don't know what they do for Alfie.

We thought that Alfie's leg would be a big issue for him a few years back, but he doesn't seem to notice it unless he exerts himself (and then he shows signs of limping until he recovers). It makes it very difficult to get the weight off him but, at his age now, I'm not all that fussed about it.

The thing I like about most pets is that they don't have human anxieties - they can't worry about things that they don't understand. Pets can have irrational fears though, which can be a bit frustrating at times, but in general I think its remarkable how many animals get over injuries and other problems because once the pain has gone and the mobility is back - even if it's not 100%, there are usually more important things to occupy themselves.

Before Alfie, I didn't like dogs much at all. In my youth, my dad would attract strays - usually little snappy bitey things that would put you off for life. Alfie taught me a lot just by being himself.

He may not be the most obedient dog in the world, and he has a habit of barking the house down if he can't greet a visitor, but he's the softest, friendliest, and most accepting animal I've ever known. I see much that he's taught me in other dogs which is why, with the exception of Staffies, I'm no longer nervous around other dogs. He's been a really positive influence.

Aaaaaah Alfie's a treasure, a joy to behold. So sweet and so relaxed all flopped out using his human for a pillow.

Our last Corgi had what we referred to as a 'universal joint' when she got old - meaning her rear leg joint could rotate virtually 360 degrees. She got so fat it was embarrassing - but she still used to take off like a puppy when an unfamiliar cat strayed into the garden.

When we knew the time had come to let her go I was curled up on the settee heartbroken but trying to be brave. She suddenly leapt up, ran puppy-style in circles around the living room, stopped to lick me all over then quietly waddled/hobbled out to the car with David to be taken to the vet.

I'll never forget that - she was comforting me as she said goodbye, letting me know she'd soon be running about like a puppy on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.

We had to say goodbye to our younger dog, a Patterdale, a few months ago. She wasn't like Alfie and I didn't think I was as close to her has I am to Alfie (Alfie being my first dog), but it really cut me up to let her go. It was the right thing to do, of course, but it's been one of those years and I wish that she was still here.

I'm just glad that Alfie's refusing to show his age. I'm not sure how I would have made it through this year without him.
