No, not Belgium. Dennis was nearer when he said Africa.

Well, I was going to say Corsica (maybe Calvi) but Dr Google tells me it wasn't liberated from the Italians until 1943. Plus that is in France...

        So, I'm stumped for now.

        Over to you, Team!

No, Southern Italy is more than 1,000 miles away although the photo was taken in a Mediterranean city.

There is a big clue in the photo...

            Geoff.

I think that's in the Lebanon.

Ian is correct, it is Beirut in Lebanon. There is a clue on one of the shop windows (I didn't notice this until last night) "Vins du Liban" with the N cropped off. Liban is French for Lebanon. My Dad had written on the back of the photo "Beyrouth 1941. Went for a drink with this Free French soldier, had too much vino!"

Over to Ian for the next image.

I understand that I visited the Lebanon in my childhood with the family, well before the middle-east unrest, back in the 60s. I can't say that I remember it though!

Anyway, thanks Geoff - here is one closer to home:

Taken on a very dull overcast and drizzly early September day in 2005.

As a large proportion of this thread was lost due to the server problems we experienced this week - see http://dpnow.com/forum2/showthread.php?t=12307 , I think it's as good a time as any to close this very large thread and start a new one.

The new thread can now be found here: http://dpnow.com/forum2/showthread.php?t=12310
