Re: What Type of Camera you use

Was given my first instamatic sometime in the 60s, treated myself to my first compact in the 70s (a Yashica... now where are THEY now?). Became a convert to SLR in the 80s... got fed up of lugging bags/lenses around like everyone else and changed to a compact....

Got my first compact digital 2 years ago (Fuji A340). Good beginners camera, but hated the lack of control. So when my daughter broke it this summer, let her pay for the repair and treated myself to a new Canon (A710) last month. Very impressed so far.

The man's just replaced ancient Digimax with a Praktica... it doesn't compare!

Re: What Type of Camera you use

Currently Panasonic FZ-20. Gave my daughter my Panasonic FX-08 after her HP did not survive a fall. Got the Panasonic because K-M Z3 started progressive failure after 2 foot fall to floor while in Africa. The Z3 will work if pressed from the ends and twisted slightly clock-wise. Cracks in the case are the only damage. Would cost more to repair than replace, unless you have the parts. Let me know if you want it and we can likely negotiate something. Before all that, got good results with Canon pocket cams like A-75 and A-540 (my wifes's current camera). I will have a DSLR of some ilk before Italy tour next April, probably Nikon or Pentax.

Fuji S9500 and Canon Powershot G3 which I still use.

They both have their places. I particularly like the Fuji for its 300 mm built in lens and the G3 for its portability and tilt and turn screen.

I would like a very tiny camera for my handbag/pocket.

This is making me Worried a Bit. I Seriously was under the impression that 90% of the guys here use DSLR's ? Seems not, So then what you all saying (most of you) is that I should rather spend more time in the "digital Darkroom" than worrying to get my hands on a DSLR, Every one says they are getting tired of Carrying Lenses around,

I can't really accept your assumption. SOME of the 7 that so far have voted in the digicam option 2 of the poll have said that, and that clearly puts them in the minority.

Of the ones that have voted for the DSLR option 3 some have moved up from digicams to DSLR's and therefore can't be said to have got tired of carrying lenses around. In fact many of those who voted for option 3 are serious even pro shooters who prefer to use the DSLR for personal work over a digicam.

It strikes me that many of those in option 2 are there because at this time they cannot justify the extra outlay of a DSLR and lenses

Well, I clicked all three as I use all three types - DSLR, compact digital and a camera phone, which qualifies as a cheap p&s.

Er, yes - I see what you mean

My own phone is a Nokia N90 (2MP camera phone), but I'm testing its replacement, the Nokia N93 at the moment.

                  And yes - not cheap

I use a canon 20d moved up to that one from a 300d. I also had a compact but found it to slow for most of the stuff I like to take photos of which is motor sport. I have 3 lenses a sigma 105 macro, canon 17-85mm and a sigma 70-200mm. I did have a canon 100-400 but have just sold it has it was in my bag and had not come out more the twice in the last year.

Re: What Type of Camera you use

Astronomy, photography and auto racing have several things in common. A key commonality is different ultimate capability based on Money ($) cubed. So the difference is not necessarily in desire but in choice of allocation of a more or less fixed resource ($). So we have inexpensive, but highly useful and entertaining, means to participate in these activities all the way up to the $ is no limit crowd. (In the US we have 1/4 mile dirt track racing with home-built cars up thru the F1 travelling circus with multi-mega-buck professional everything.) Bigger and faster are not "better", just different. IMHO

Now that DSLR prices are reaching levels that the "common" man can afford, we should expect to see a shake-out in the upper ranges of the auto-everything equipment. It has served us well, even given us pseudo-manual controls. Those who desire to be more in direct control of their photo gear will migrate towards DSLR's, while those may be more oriented to results than concerned with process will likely not. The good news is more affordable choices between more capable products.

Just my $.02 worth of philosophy for today. Now go out and shoot! What are you doing sitting in front of those stupid computers that can only do exactly what you tell them (if only you knew their language)!

                        Hi,
I use a Fuji 9500 zoom and a cannon A70 ( now my wifes camera), I also posess a minolta 35mm film SLR, a Lubitel medium format TLR and numerous old, some very old compacts of various makes. My film camera's have not seen the light of day now for at least 7 months since getting my first digi camera.
Sometimes I miss the SLR, but find my Fuji great fun and a pleasure to use. I don't miss the expense and restrictions of film though.

I think there is more to justify than expense. First not every one needs the extra high quality of a DSLR when, after all it's a hobby, and only need to produce smaller images for shear pleasure. Second some of us have been there done it so to speak and now just can't be bothered. I have opted for the simple life. A DSLR would only be a status symbol I can well do without at my age.

                              I use:

                              Canon G3
                              Ikelite U/W housing
                              Internal flash
UK Light Cannon with diffuser attatched to the housing with Ultra lite arms

My next setup will be between a Canon EOS 30 to 50 with dual strobe arms.

Don't be daft. dSLR a "status symbol?

You could always wear a paper bag over yer head and pretend yer not there and it's not yours anyway, like I do. Maybe I'll remove the bag after I've got around to putting white sleeves on the lenses.

Yer not that old either, young'un!!
