Tom, I have a Dell Dimension (9200) and it runs Photoshop superbly!

have you not considered just upgrading what you have?

Yes, I gues you have a point.

I purchased my Dimension from the Outlet, and it was around 500quid.

          Hi Tom,

Here is a link to a laptop on PC World to give you and idea regarding the sort of specifications you would be looking at:

            Thanks to everyone.
At the moment I am considering that my system may well only need a RAM upgrade, maybe to a GB or two.
I know Stephen uses a laptop a lot for his work and I am wondering if he had any advice on the laptop front.

what is the spec of your laptop?

www.crucial.com is a good site to run a check.

I am using 1gb at present, about to upgrade to 3gb. I have found Crucial to be very competitive and it is guaranteed to work.

I am thinking about increasing my RAM from 1 GB to 2 GB. Today I did the "Crucial " test and it told me I had 4 Gbs!

I started with half a Gb and added another half Gb from Cruicial about 3 years ago, so do a double check if you use Crucial's download software!

I have also used Belarc Advisor (free download)

as this is what is says:

                    1024 Megabytes Installed Memory

                    Slot 'A0' has 128 MB
                    Slot 'A1' has 4096 MB
                    Slot 'A2' is Empty
                    Slot 'A3' is Empty

I can't really understand it as you can see initially it says
                    1024 Megabytes Installed Memory

                    and then it says:

                    Slot 'A0' has 128 MB
                    Slot 'A1' has 4096 MB

I do only have the 1 Gb though.

Can anyone through any light on this misinformation?

Can't help on the Crucial test. My test result is exactly what I thought. I have an Intel Core Duo and it runs most things very fast. I think the RAM issue is a problem when I run Lightroom and PSE5 simultaneously. I use a 20" CRT monitor from Sony. I won't change to LCD until I have to because I like the high resolution. Up to 1600 x 1200. An LCD of this resolution is very expensive.

I may be upgrading Julia's laptop as she is finding her 17" single core machine too slow and too heavy

                        This caught my eye:

                        http://www5.pc.ibm.com/uk/products.nsf/$wwwPartNumLookup/_TY2B4UK?OpenDocument

Get minimum 1440x900 screen res, 7200 RPM SATA hard drive and 2GB RAM.

                          Hello Ben
It is a basic Dimension 2400 with no upgrades. The ram is very low and needs upgrading.
I looked at the 9200 and the spec is way above mine. If I can get away with a ram upgrade only I will go that way. It's the cheapest upgrade and won't do the machine any harm anyway .

                            Hi Tom,

What spec CPU do you currently have?

Memory and hard disk upgrades may be a good solution, but this depends on the CPU.
