  • Thornham Norfolk - Challenge

Thornam Creek is a muddy little creek near Hunstanton in Norfolk but it is quite photogenic with a flint built shed, abandoned boats and several moorings. Lots of birds including avocets and, yesterday a pair of kingfishers. I have seen several pictures posted on various forums (fora for the Latinists amongst you) of the shed and boats. Pictures of the creek appear regularly in photographic and art exhibitions, indeed sometimes it is hard to take a picture without trampling on the odd artist (and many are VERY odd)

Just a liitle way from the shed is a long abandoned wharf and the old posts, all grey and heavily weathered, some pierced for cross beams, are a natural for dramatic shots. Like the shed, these posts also often feature in art exhibitions against various imaginative skies.

Over the years I have taken dozens, if not hundreds, of shots of these posts. I have never been satisified enough with any shot to bother printing it, let enough having it as the exhibition shot that I am sure is there somewhere.

So here is a mini challenge for those of you who have visited and photographed Thornham - impress me with a dramatic shot of the old wharf posts.

Those who live in more exotic places please feel free to chip in with similar old wharf pictures to add to the fun.

    Re: Thornham Norfolk - Challenge

I'm stickying this thread for a time as it had disappeared off the portal page with no one having posted in it. I'd have liked to see one of your own pics Cap'n Bill, just to get the ball rolling. Anyway here is one of mine, not at Thornham, but at Blakeney on the North Norfolk coast. I'm sure there must be others with shot that fir the bill (no pun intended)

It's quite a lot to expect plenty of people to have visited this one place (I haven't) so I wonder if it would be OK for people to post images of similar scenes?

Stephen, here is one of my pictures

Ian, you are of course right about the one location but I have seen it appear in both 4/3 user and e-system galleries. However, yes, lets make it similar old moorings/wharfs anywhere, anytime.

I love taking pictures of boats, harbours etc and this Challenge has encouraged me to review a folder of such shots taken along the North Norfolk coast. I've never shown this one before, I'm not even sure of the exact location, but it appealed to me. Decided as it was a little flat in colour to process it in mono.

I've never been to Thornham, but funnily enough, without knowing it was a much-photographed place, I did notice some old boats there, and marked it on Google Earth in the hope that I might get to visit on our Norfolk holiday a few weeks ago. Alas, we didn't have the time, but here are a few old boat photos that I've taken recently in other areas of the country.

A beautiful ship Mike. I believe Charlestown's biggest claim to fame was as a port for shipping out China clay

                    Re: Thornham Norfolk - Challenge

Thats true as Par Docks are about half a mile down the coast and still ship wahat remains of the China Clay Industry here in Mid Cornwall. both villages are almost swallowed up by the Metropolis we now call St Austell.

Not sure if this consitutes a wharf or is it just a jetty? Alas, I've never been to Norfolk! Anyway, I took this at Lake Windermere very early morning back in the spring this year.
