Hi Tom,
Great clarity there which is entrancing...causing an "is it real or a picture" double-take. It has the kind of vividness that dutch still life paintings have. I'm so habituated in seeing shallow depth of field in food adverts that the opposite becomes arresting...cute. That's my first response with the peach body-memories following.
I see this more as a study in depiction and tableaux than "food porn". It allows more enquiry by the eye rather than limiting it to the bare essentials of what the limited focus pushes us to get. The deep DOF also flattens the image perspective as does the even lighting on the cloth (no falloff to the background) so it becomes like a painting.
-classically beautiful.

I took this with my mju1030, but realised when I got home I'd forgoten to clean the lens from the a previous shoot and it was very smeared...

alright for some!... what was that green sauce?
funny how the flat perspective (and maybe white plate being like paper) pushes it nearer flat abstraction than "immersive" sensory confrontation for me, that said the peppered steak gets me salivating all on its' own!

I find this one initially difficult, not sure why. perhaps because I've never seen ice quite like it. perhaps the apparent soft focus creates a kind of veil that keeps it slightly 'out of reach' or unreal. I find myself marvelling at the crystal patterns and getting distracted from the sensory implications of them. funny it's actually the water that gives me a shiver, It looks rank and I guess because I could touch the dry crystals without too much discomfort, but If I got my hand wet it would quickly freeze. My head tells me it must be cold but the immediate impact of the colours doesn't. Have you got similar shots with more blue/grey in?

Hi Mike, Why not? it has the elements of close-sense engagement as in food ads, (albeit focus-reversed). It takes a moment to read so it's not dramatically or exclusively touch based, but it's there, it takes us to that fresh expansive space holding a cup...bingo!

The point isn't that there are absolutely "haptic shots" distinct from all others..(I don't know which is why I'm curious), but that it is a very active ingredient of a lot of images, -arguably all images to some degree. looking for clear examples just seems like a good way of sensitising to this flavour that's blended into the mix in a lot of photos, both intentionally and instinctively.

I'll try and dig up the web links to others' shots that triggered and fed this line of thinking in me, (some are a gas;-)

Hi Silo,

As you said we are affected by memory and past experience, the sight of snow and ice crystals immediately take me to my childhood snd the sensation of catching snow on one's tongue, or breaking off ice and licking it. To me the water looks clear, although there is detritus at the bottom of the pool. This is the only shot of this I have.

I do find the thread interesting, though and will look out for some more images that might qualify.

We're all uniquely wired by our nurture, but overlap in having broadly the same physical nature. I hope by knocking it back and forth that we can get a sense of where the line or overlap is, ...or just have fun with it :-)
