I believe the light is transmitted via fibre-optics within the thing there...

Total guess because I'm not into dentistry but is it for illuminating a dye or something similar, to aid looking for faults / cracks etc?

Second guess, is it to UV cure dental work?

Yess indeedie, it is the UV lamp for curing composite white fillings and I suppose it could be used for showing up dyed bacteria.

and the wider scene. the blue sheet is a rubber dam used to stop patients from swallowing mercury debris that's being drilled out.

Great thanks Silo, that was quite a tough one, well done with that challenge
I can see why making more visible would have pretty much given it away.

Right I need to think of something now, I'll try and post some images up at some point this evening / later today.
