Not sure what is was for but after reading article in Wikipedia guessing for flash like Magicube.
This is the one that fits my Minox LX

The Flash Cube and Magicube were quite different, in that while the Flash Cube needed a power supply to fire it, the Magicube had an inbuilt system that ignited the flash.

Well done Svetlana, the ball is now in your court, ready for you to serve.

Thanks Graham, for the information as well. I did not know all the details.

I'll post something in a few hours.

Here is what caught my eye today. Should not be too difficult to guess.

Looks sort of machinery-like, doesn't it?

Sorry, no. But it is photography-related.

Great picture, Svetlana - I too instantly thought of a shutter. Intriguing!

                Thanks, Ian.
I've never taken a shutter apart but looked at some pictures on the internet. And can say that the object in question is simpler than a shutter.

Is it to do with a tripod or camera accessories I need a clue?

I really can't think of a way of telling what it is to do with without giving away the answer.
However, as a clue I can tell you that any more or less serious photographer has at least one, usually more than one of these things. By "serious" I mean anyone who uses a bit more specialized equipment than a mobile phone to take pictures

It's unlike anything that I've got (I think)

But that's probably because I'm hardly ever serious

Funtionally it looks like a one of those clips that simply slides in and locks in place, but has to be pushed down on to open it...

I'll guess at a hotshoe cover

Graham, you are VERY close. "Slides", "locks in place" - all correct. Nothing to do with a hotshoe though.

Next clue then. The particular design of the photographed part of the object varies and depends on manufacturer. For example, those made by Nikon, that I have, look different from this one. I can't tell you the manufacturer of this one though, otherwise you'll guess instantly.

I was, ever-so-gently, made fun of last weekend for getting these so quickly, so maybe I should be looking beyond the hot shoe, to the inner workings of this item

I would not say this item has any inner workings, if I understood what you meant correctly (my apologies if I did not - English is not my first language and some meanings slip away from me sometimes).
Of course, "inner" and "outer" are relative terms You can call the photographed part of the object "inner", in a sense.

Part of the memory card holder in a camera? maybe the lock that holds the cover in place?
