We were over at one of the kids' schoolfriend's house yesterday and the mum was sorting through some fabulous looking blackcurrants from the garden

We used to have Blackcurrants too but they gradually disappeared, seemed to die off.

Those Redcurrants are rapidly getting eaten. Hardly any of then left this afternoon because there's a steady stream of juvenile Robins feasting on them. They always sing a little song before they grab one, flutter up, grab the berry, sit on the fence with it in their beak then fly away. It's a very 'tweet' routine they have.

My father, who lives in Thailand most of the year, is over for the summer here in the UK and he brought some rambutan and mangosteen. Rambutan is a fruit with a whitefleshy interior and with a - rather similar in appearance to a lychee, with a stone in the middle, and it's very sweet when ripe. It's easily recognisable as the exterior is red and covered in what is inbetween hairs and spikes - they aren't sharp and are a bit curly

Mangosteen is again white on the inside and segmented, and the fleshy innards are protected by a semi-woody shell that can stain your fingers purple. It has a taste that is sweet and tangy and slightly reminiscent of mango, which may be why it's called mangosteen.

He also has mango trees in the garden

The French really know how to do a good market. The one here in Hemel Hempstead only comes alive when the French vendors come over once or twice a year!

As I said previously, no fruit to speak of this year, but his is today's harvest from the vegetable garden.

                              A bumper harvest Bear.

A veggie delight. Imagine your taste buds whilst grilling the peppers and gently sweating the tomatoes and courgette etc and then eaten with garlic bread.

Mind, I do enjoy my fish and chicken too - preferably in Singapore noodles or just eaten with vegetable.

                              Regards. Barr1e

                                Re: Summer fruits

Barrie, this is the start of our summer season and all the signs seem to point to it being a good one. We certainly hope so, to make up for the terrible performance of our spring veg this year. There is way too much for us to eat as from now until the end of September we will be picking this amount two or three times a week. A lot will be given away to friends who don't have land of their own.

The aubergines, courgettes, peppers and squash will go on the BBQ tomorrow afternoon to be eaten with grilled veal (humane of course). The tomatoes will be kept for eating on toast covered in olive oil (our own brand) for breakfast and the cucmber will be made inot tzatziki and eaten with toasted mollete (local olive oil bread). I love summer !
