  • It was my birthday

Some people at one of DPNow's sibling sites (e-group.uk.net) wanted to know what I did on my birthday the other day. Basically, I took lots of pictures of one of my daughters *lol

I thought I'd show them here as well:

These shots of my younger daughter, Lara, were all taken using an Olympus E-420 and 25mm f/2.8 'pancake' lens, initially processed from RAW in Olympus Studio and then exported as JPEG (I forgot to save as an EXIF JPEG, so there is no EXIF data in the images, sorry, but there are some notes in the gallery) and then tweaked a bit in Lightroom:

Shot at ISO 1600, this is my favourite.

Lara got some unflattering shots of me which I'm not showing here!

Shot at f/2.8 and ISO 400 - I quite like the glowing quality of the light.

Also shot at f/2.8 and ISO 400.

Lastly, quite low key, this one - maybe not to everyone's tastes? Also f/2.8 at ISO 400.

No pix of Elizabeth, my older daughter - she's a bit camera shy at the moment!

    Re: It was my birthday

Charming photos Ian, and it sounds like your remaining photo subject in the family No doubt in a year or so when the hormones kick in she won't be so keen either Basically you should make the most of it while you have the chance.

I suspect that in some of them that the LR tweaks have created some shadow noise. A bit of fill in flash with a stofen on it may have helped considerably, though the knock on effect is often you loose some of the ambience of the shot. 50mm(equiv) and f2.8 seems to have done the business though.

Hope you had a good birthday Ian. They are a lovely record. I enjoy taking pics of our grandchildren these days. Our four 'Children' are middle aged.

Our grandchildren range from 3 to 24, so there is plenty of scope. We started off by inviting one of the family with their 2 to lunch on Sunday and then another, and then another and of course you could not leave the eldest out, so it looks like 17 for Sunday lunch.

Enjoy your little ones and take many pictures. My parents always took pictures and my brothers and I keep handing round the family albums. One of my brothers has scanned some of us when we were young. They are great to keep. I also find photos missing out of our family albums, after our children have been looking at them.

      Keep shooting.

You have grandchildren as old as 24?! But you come across so young

I was really only experimenting with the new camera body and lens to see how it faired in demanding available light conditions. There is some faint banding in the ISO 1600 shot, but I don't mind a bit of noise grain as long as it's not clumpy or discoloured.

Don't worry, my skills at candid shooting are being honed by the more reclusive Elizabeth

            Flattery will get you everywhere.

Our 17 has grown to 18 now.

            4 children + 3 wives + 1 partner, plus 7 grandchildren, plus one grandchild's partner, plus us = 18.

The phone rang tonight and Roy said "Don't answer it, we don't want anyone else to lunch on Sunday!"

It was one of our sons so we had a good laugh. They are all offering to bring stuff. I said just clear up afterwards - that's all we need.
