  • Happy New Year!

Chinese new year that is. 2008 - year of the Rat.

a photo taken last night from the Lion Dance forming part of the CNY celebrations at my favourite Chinese restaurant.

The motion blurring is by design to try and emulate some of the dynamism as the lion dances through the restaurant. The eagle eyed may spot the lettuce dangling from the ceiling. This is devoured, along with the red envelopes, by the lion before spitting the lettuce back out again. The envelopes, containing money, are kept by the lion.

The picture works well Dave and conveys something of the atmosphere and action, not to mention people having a good time. good creative use of the camera

      Re: Happy New Year!

thanks stephen. embarrassingly, it was the first time i'd known about this particular celebration so couldn't pass up the opportunity to grab some photos.

exposure was manual everything (1/6s @ F11) with the flash set to 1/16th power so that the lion could be properly exposed but the rest of the restaurant could be bathed in the orange glow from the regular lighting, rather than the harsh white from the strobe unit. the only mod is a crop as it was shot halfway through the zoom range of the 10-20 sigma i was using and needed tightening up a little.

Hey Dave, didn't know you had this lens. I'm thinking of getting one, Canon don't make one that fits a non APS-C sensor camera like the 1D range and this seems to be the answer, but not sure of the quality, both in terms of build and optics. What are your feelings about it.

            Re: Happy New Year!

Thanks for that Dave, it makes me feel less doubtful about Sig lenses, though in fairness to Patrick, he has always sworn by them. All my lenses are Cnon L series and I have often thought Sigs were a compromise. However I checked out the spec on the Sigma site and it seems you are right about it being only for APS-C sensors, so will have to forget that particular one. It seems the one for me is the 12-24 which when used with my 1DMkIIN with its APS-H sensor gives 15.6mm equiv compared with 16mm equiv for your 10-20mm on the APS-C camera. So there aint much in it, and I'm off to check out the price on Ebay. Wanna buy a 100-400 F4-5.6L IS lens

Can i gatecrash this cozy little Canon party
I've got the 10-20 on my NIKON D2X and it's a pretty sharp lense , yes you do get distorsion at 10mm both vertical and horizontal but nothing that can't be pulled out in PS .
I got mine from Jessops in Maidstone , don't normally use them for various reasons but needed the lense quick and they had stock .

Sorry you can go back to Canonphobia now .

                    B..

Thanks for the input Bigbob, Canon Party indeed The glass is the same whatever the mount. Interesting you mention the distortion, as I read a review on Ephotozine about the 12-24 which is the one that will fit my camera, and it said barrel distortion was very well controlled being well below the acceptable limits apparently it doesn't become visible to the human eye till it reaches -1.5% and this lens gave a reading of -1.13% at the 12mm end

stephen, although it's designed for aps-c sensors, it may be worth giving it a go on the mk2. pop into jessops, say you're interested in buying but need to give it a quick test first.
there are only 2 lenses ever attached to the 10d (my sports workhorse). that's the 10-20 sig and the 70-200 white thingamajig
