  • Heron caught in fading golden light

Taken late this afternoon just as the light was fading.

    Lens was a Digital Zuiko 90-250 @119mm (238mm in old currency), ISO 400, f/2.8, 1/400th - really needed 1/1000th or faster.

The colours in the reflection are fantastic. Really makes a nice contrast to the Heron. This is one of those birds I would love to get a picture of. Saw two yesterday flying together but was no where near ready to get a picture.

    Best Regards

I was returning to the office as it was getting a bit too dark for pictures and as I crossed over one of the canal (Grand Union in Apsley) bridges, there he/she was. Next thing I knew it was on the opposite bank and I had time to set up the shot, knowing it would take off again as it was on the path side of the canal. Sure enough, but after what seemed a never ending wait with the focus locked and finger on the button off it went as some people approached. Took 6 frames, but this was the only one worth showing.

Good shot Ian - beautiful light and reflections in the canal.

I love the 'arty' appearance of this image. The colours and background reflections are very pleasing imo.

I was watching a Heron from the opposite side of a busy road a week or so ago, parked in a layby on a bend. It seemed well settled on the bank but just a tad too far away so I decided to get out, asked David to help me hobble across the road safely with the kit and get closer as there was a good fence and gate to rest on.

We made it safely over, got into position and it took off just as we were ready to start shooting.

              Hi Ian
A super shot, and what luck the light and bird taking off and you being there at that moment, shame about the shutter speed, but you got the image anyway.
