  • Hello from Shanghai

Well, at least the 11 hour flight is behind me now Have to say that we're in a fantastic hotel here in Shanghai (Waldorf Astoria) and here is the view from my room:

Had to process this quite hard in lightroom as the view was very misty.

And just for a laugh, here are the toilet controls in my room

    More to come!

Good morning, Ian. Good to know you landed safely and have a comnfortable room with a great view.

I just you're gonna have a great time playing with that swanky khazi and we look forward to a full and detailed report about it when you get back.

Nice to hear your accomodation is up to standard, would hate to think of you having to rough it.
Those controls are going to be fun . Looks like a marble decor you have there as well.

YouTube is blocked here so I have uploaded this to the DPNow server. I thought it was amusing

Typically British, this - toilet humour!

Ooo I love that last one (the night shot). They're all fascinating, all good stuff but that night shot is a belter!

Is that a smoggy sky or is it high humidity, a mist? The tones are certainly showing well in that sky.

Oh yes . the night shot from your window is superb.
First impression of the first one, I thought the guy was holding a gun to his head.
Also like the candid of the elderly's on the bench.

Really interesting shots - particularly the night time one (I'll join the chorus there...)

                I liked the oldies too

The mind boggles Ian. I am still laughing. I really don't know whether all these buttons are for cleaning yourself or the toilet itself - rear cleansing hard and soft, front cleansing, pulsating, oscillating, pressure, position and dryer.

                  I guess it's a built in bidet.

The only thing I wonder is can you reach the buttons if you are sitting down. I imagine the water squirting all over the place.

You are right typically British toilet humour!

It reminds me of a joke when I was at school (God how many years ago is that?) (65) Oh at the time it seemed funny.

"Did you know the Queen doesn't use toilet paper?"

"No, what does she use?" "A velvet gloved hand comes out of the toilet and performs the necessary!" We thought it was hilarious, and I can remember telling my mother and she tried not to laugh.

Looking at your contraption Ian it really wasn't far off.

Sorry if it's not funny or too rude and disrespectful.

Off to bed. Enjoy the rest of your holiday Ian. Love the pictures.

In the night shot there was some rain and drizzle, but there is a fair amount of pollution in the air. I'm hoping it will be better later in the week.

The night shot, incidentally, was taken with the J1, not the V1.

I have a lot more night shots to show as we went on a river cruise last night

The clouds (and pollution) certainly seem to have been picked up nicely in the picci.

I'm loving your pictures, all of them bringing J ballard (Shanghai Jim) to mind for me. Although the book is infinitely more detailed, it was there on the banks of the Bund where he was separated from his family.

I believe the opening scenes of Empire of the Sun were also filmed on Nanjing Road, at the end of the road near the Bund; the place where he was separated from them.

Thanks for uploading the automatic loo to flickr too. Very hygienic.

One point about the loo I have just noticed....
the loo door is transparent and there are 2 wash basins
