  • Fortnightly Salon Competion #26 - Bird(s) in Flight

THE THEME FOR SALON COMPETITION NO 26 IS

    " Bird(s) in Flight "
Feel free to interpret the Challenge in whatever way you wish.

    Here are the rules:

    1) All photographs are to be uploaded to the photo gallery at http://dpnow.com/galleries/
The resulting link generated for the photo will then be pasted into the next available space in the Salon thread.

    2) One entry per user ID only please, which must be the personal work of the entrant.

    3) Entries should be "In line" within the thread (not as links to an image held somewhere else, any external links or photos held anywhere other than the Galleries will be deleted.)

    4) Comments only on entries are welcome within the salon thread itself.

    5) After the close the curator will indicate a winner and a couple of runners up.

    6) The curator's decision is final.

    7) Winners should be offered first refusal to choose the next theme and curate the next salon.

    8. If the winner is unable to curate the next salon the current curator may offer that "honour" to any willing volunteer, possibly the entrant in second or third place.

    9) These rules are to be copied and pasted with a new theme by the new Curator at the top of the new Salon thread with a finish date and time.

    10) As with all photos posted on DPNow, copyright remains with the photographer and DPNow will not use them without permission.

The competition will close at midnight GMT on Sunday 30th September, 2007 and I will aim to post the results the following day.

Good luck and try not to hate me ha ha, remember shutter speeds up over 1/1600 with CAF in sequential is a good start.

One of he few species of birds I can usually manage to capture in flight - though I sometimes land flat on my back in the process.

A Herring Gull swooping over a lake. Shot at 210mm with Pentax K10D + Tamron 28-300mm.

Super shot! You got loads of detail there, including the collar.

You just have to love their tails.

Again, good focus around the eyes, and a striking bird, anyone know that one?

                    Nicely done.

I think it's an Eagle Owl, though I'm not 100% sure.

There's a BBC article and video of an Eagle Owl HERE. Handlers fly them in Raptor diplays in the UK and are some are rescued & kept in some UK sactuaries.

I'm definitely up for this challenge - weather permitting. Was thwarted by the weather earlier today, but will have another go if I can tomorrow

                            Good luck wiv it.

My own technique is to stand back with the zoomed pulled back (wide) until I get my 'chosen' bird in the frame. Then I zoom in on it as I follow its flight path and aim to click the shutter before I lose it out of the frame.

Seagulls can be good ones to try for. If you're lucky enough to be there when they're trying to fly into the wind it's even better - because they kinda 'hover' as the wind in their face slows down their progress.

Hope that helps for anyone who hasn't done it before but might fancy having a go at it.

I have a few other "birdy" pics from Egypt, I'll put them in my gallery when I get a chance.
