It's a bit grainy in the background, but otherwise fantastic

        Did you use flash?

All I know for sure is that the panning is superb - panning I'd do almost anything but die for. I'm very envious of anyone who can do that. It's a belter imho (with or without the grain).

I have to prepare the Sunday roast, but I'm having one last foray in a min to see if I can get a bird in flight with the big lens

image has been archived off the 'puter, so can't find the exif, but it was shot on the old dimage 5, which wasn't exactly renowned for it's noise capabilities. yep, did use fill flash. it would've been virtually impossible to pan that bird with the angles it was continually pulling.

Oly 40-150 mm lens. I took this this morning but wasnt satisfied with the quality.

Thats about as far out of my comfort zone as I can get Stephen

Best of a bad bunch. First attempt at this. They all had some blur but I thought this one a least told a story. Sorry if I am a bit late

Well you have all made good attempts at a difficult assignment that I did have second thoughts about because of the inherent diffculties.
My own personal preference for these captures tends to lean for eye level birds entering the viewers space like...

                          Congratulations and nicely done, Charles.

Brilliant! Congratulations and well done. I knew the owl would win it, it is a great picture.

I found this difficult to cover. Stephen sums it all well when he says time to get out of your comfort zone, I just couldn't do it. I wanted either something different, like the owl, or a different perspective, say from above looking at the bird flying below rather than from the side or underneath and I just couldn't do that. Never mind, some inspiring shots though and I will try and go and generally have a go at birds, something I have not really thought about until seeing these pics.

Anyhow, sorry about the waffle, well done and I cant wait to see what the next subject is...

Congratulations to Coupekid - great shot and well done to runners up Pops and Pol. Thank you Changeling for running this "winged" salon (despite not managing to enter myself ) Looking forward to your theme Ben.
