Andrew Thatcher has been in touch with Mal - I understand he is quite busy with work at the moment, but hopefully he will be with us soon to get the salon running again!

Many thanks Brian and everyone, I'm really chuffed, thank you all.

Sorry for the delay. I will get the next Salon rolling this evening.

P.S. Forgot to say that there is a bit of a funny end to my particular image. It was taken on a tripod that was not fixed to anything sitting on the back seat of the car and I was using a cable release to activate the shutter. As I pulled up at the pay kiosk at the other side of the tunnel, the whole tripod and camera assembly decided to launch forward and join me in the front of the car, slightly embarrassing to say the least.... lol

              Hi Mal,
Wow! where does one get a 3ft + cable release and pay when you get to the end of the tunnel? I have to pay before I enter. That must be one hell of a tripod to stand on your back seat and get a shot like that! Thinking about it Mercedes do a similar photo in their catalogues, that's a coincidence isn't it? Tell me, how did you get everything spot on focus wise, have you a Hasselblad with a digital back!

              All the best,

              John.

Re: DP Now Salon Competition #101: Getting There

                Hi John

At that time I had the Canon 5D, I was using the canon TC-80N3 electronic cable release which has a 1m lead wire.

I was holding the release control button in my right hand and out of shot at around my crotch area.

I had stopped in a lay by prior to the tunnel and made some presumptions about the potential environment in the tunnel. The camera had been pre focused to just below infinity and had been fitted with a sigma 17-35 which was set and fixed to 17mm and set to manual focus, so that it would not hunt for extraneous fixed points.

Also, I had set the camera manually on a shutter speed of (if I remember correctly 6 seconds on shutter priority) and trust that the camera would select the correct exposure setting. It was complete hit and miss. I took about 11 images while traveling through the tunnel, this just happened to be the best of them

I have plans to improve this image through the fixing of the camera to more sturdy points and repeated efforts, this one is the first of a few planned shoots.

                all the best
                mal

                P.S.

All payments to the "Tyne" tunnel are made on the south side, regardless of you going north or south, I was traveling south and had no intrusion in my travel while coming from the north.
