    Hi Gina -

In Ian's post above he suggested the following to another member:

Just to clarify, I think wsearfoss means that images should be un-edited from the camera, but it's impractical to post full size images, so I'm sure resizing for Web display is acceptable:

For landscape format images, I recommend resizing to 800 pixels wide. Light sharpening after resizing is a good idea as resizing does soften images.

For portrait or vertical format images, I recommend 700 pixels high.

Keep your images to no more than around 200K (JPEG compression) for a good balance between size and visual quality.

    Ian

If you think I should withdraw my entry I will be quite willing to do so.

    Regards. Barr1e

      Barrie,

My personal view on this, and I stress it's my personal view, is, according to the rules, that the curator's decision is final.

So I feel you should leave the picci as it is and let the curator (wsearfoss) decide. It's his salon therefore his decision ... and you have been honest and clear about the marginal tweak you've done.

In order to post sensibly to the Web you inevitably have to down-size from the original camera image. Resizing does introduce softness, so neither do I see any problem with resize sharpening, but I think it's practically essential.

My interpretation of 'straight out of the camera' is not literal (it simply wouldn't work on the Web anyway), but I see it as a challenge to take a picture that is not adjusted in terms of tone, colour, and framing - as well as extreme adjustment to sharpness. Slight sharpening, only to compensate for resizing should be acceptable, however.

I think this salon should have had the rules made clear from the start. I feel it's unfair to those who have not touched their entries apart from resizing for the web that's all. I could have 'slightly sharpened' too but didn't. I don't want anyone to feel bad about it but perhaps in future salons the rules by the curator are very clear?

Gina, if you think the term 'straight out of the camera' should be interpreted literally, why did you resize your image for the entry?

But let's not less this issue boil over. It was an unforeseen issue. The Salon is for relaxed and easy going friendly competition. I'm sure nobody will mind if you (or anyone else) sharpened for resizing your entry as advised.

It is worth pointing out that resizing usually either carries out bicubic sharpening or smoothing in any case. Reducing size digitally is not the same as resizing using an enlarger in a dark room, although even there the grade of the printing paper, etc. has an effect on the original image. We should just leave it to the curator/judge to make up his mind on how he awards the final placing.

Indeed, Photoshop and other similar programs offer options to resize and sharpen at the same time, but this isn't the default.

                  Ian
Ian I resized because the original image is 9.46MB and 3888x2592 and I don't have enough space left in the gallery to upload full size.

                    OK, here's my effort:

This was taken at the Puy du Fou historical theme park in France. Highly recommended, by the way!

Thomas has just chosen this one for his entry, taken not far from your shot Audrey in Sherwood Forrest.

Well done Thomas, I like the angle and swans are difficult to photograph.

I hope you enjoyed your holiday at Centre Parks. I went there for a day once. It's fantastic for children.

Did you go to Clumber Park? Plenty of opportunities for good photos there Ash particularly at this time of the year.

                          Good Luck Thomas.
