    2) Availability - if one catalogue got corrupted at least you would not lose all your edits.

I have just obtained a free copy of Capture One so considering which way to go: Capture One & Expression Media or Lightroom 3.

I guess the best way would be to give each a good trial run. Lightroom has the advantage of a single user interface but I have some concerns about how it manages things under the hood.
Firstly, I have a catalogue with some 55000+ images in it, though remember they are not full size files only relatively small preview images. I have never noticed a problem with performance related to the size of the catalogue. Also Adobe have clearly said that LR3 has improved performance.

Secondly, it is possible to set Lightroom to back up at regular intervals, so it is unlikely that you would lose all your edits as you could always use a previous backup. Also the original files are unaffected anyway, so the few folders of photos you imported since the last backup would likely be relatively small and would be relatively easy to reimport. Since I started using LR when V1 was released this has never happened. Frankly I can't imagine what would cause your catalogue to become corrupted, but all things are possible I suppose

This free copy of Capture One is hopefully the full version and not a Lite version I once had. Though its accepted that Capture One is a good program, the free Lite version is very much scaled down in functionality. Lightroom is in my opinion a better program and is the full deal when it comes to photographic workflow

      Hi

I got Capture One as Phase One have just taken over Expression Media from Microsoft so if have an Expression License you get a paid version of Capture One for free but it is not the full featured version so no lens correction for example.

If you a paid version of Captrue One they will give you a free copy of Expression Media.

I guess they will merge into a LR look alike at some stage, a news item on this available at

I will have to try the two raw converts in the latest Adobe Camera Raw / LR and Capture One to see the differences.

Did a little investigation to understand what LR uses for its database and discovered it is SQLite:

Capture 1 has always been highly regarded interms of sheer RAW development potential. Adobe Camera RAW (at the heart of Photoshop and Lightroom) has mainly been rated as inferior in terms of potential image quality, especially in terms of sharpening and noise management, although it's much easier to use than Capture 1, and in Lightroom the workflow is faster.

But I think Lightroom has really caught up now with version 3.

It's interesting to recall that Lightroom owes some of its DNA to Capture 1 as some of the boffins left Phase One (who produce Capture 1) to set up on their own and produced Raw Shooter Essentials, which was in turn acquired by Adobe when they were developing the software they acquired from Macromedia that eventually became Lightroom!
