Re: Lightroom 3 now officially launched
Just been having a look at the trial version of Lightroom 3, the lens correction looks good although not many lenses supported yet presumably more will be added with the passage of time. Only 5 Sigma lenses as yet, which is what I own, some 7 of them. It doesn't include their most popular wide angle the 10-20, strange that. The manual lens correction to make your own profile is a big improvement on 2. It was very basic and something of an after thought.
The whole program feels more responsive that past versions as well.

It is more responsive and was one of the things they said they had made an effort to improve. It remains to be seen for definite but so far I have had no hangups/lockups like I used to do occasionally.Originally posted by Patrick View PostJust been having a look at the trial version of Lightroom 3, the lens correction looks good although not many lenses supported yet presumably more will be added with the passage of time. The lens correction panel is certainly one of the whizz bang improvements to the prog, though there are many more which are less obvious. So far I have been pleased with the new sharpening and noise reduction (Detail) panels..............you will be impressed.
As I said though there are lots of small improvements like the new import and export dialogues, and for those who do studio work, tethered working.
There is still lots for me to explore in the other modules and I'm really looking forward to it. Will show a few pics later on that I ran through the new Noise Reduction......absolutely brilliant.

Re: Lightroom 3 now officially launched
Adobe are candid about the fact that they aren't in the business of producing lens profiles. So they have produced a selection of profiles for Canon, Nikon and Sigma lenses, but the onus will be on users to generate their own profiles by downloading test target graphics provided by Adobe and using these to produce DIY profiles. I expect such profiles will soon be doing the rounds on the NetOriginally posted by Patrick View PostJust been having a look at the trial version of Lightroom 3, the lens correction looks good although not many lenses supported yet presumably more will be added with the passage of time. Re: Lightroom 3 now officially launched
The tethered mode is certainly of interest to me, it could be done in the old versions but was very flaky being done via the Canon tethered software. I shall try it out later and report back if I'm not beaten to it by you Stephen.Originally posted by Stephen View PostIt is more responsive and was one of the things they said they had made an effort to improve. I didn't get the same feel good factor from the Beta version of 3 as I am from the retail version, in fact I lost interest in the beta.

I'm surprised, Patrick - I thought the beta, especially release 2, was cracking.Originally posted by Patrick View PostThe tethered mode is certainly of interest to me, it could be done in the old versions but was very flaky being done via the Canon tethered software. My interest never extended to version 2, so I never downloaded it.Originally posted by Ian View PostI'm surprised, Patrick - I thought the beta, especially release 2, was cracking.

Sorry to be negative
However I shall before the trial period of 30 days is up probably buy the retail version.
Stephen pointed out how good the noise reduction is, I have tried that now and it does appear to be very effective, possibly as good as or even better than Noise Ninja which I have the plug-in for Photoshop.

First impressions is how effective it appears to be, the image can be processed on the fly by taking one image, then making adjustments, levels, sharpening, saturation any of the adjustments are available to you, then select as previous, and all your images you now captured will be given the same treatment as you shot.
Its also possible to use one of the many presets offered, but only one function at a time. This means if Sepia preset were chosen its not possible to say sharpen as well.
I have only experienced Canons tethered software before and its rather basic, so some of the features Lighroom offers are fantastic.
Tests to date I'm impressed.

Not so far as I can tell. Each catalogue you create seems to contain info only on the folders and keywords you have used in that catalogue.Originally posted by Invicta View PostAnybody know if Lightroom 3 supports searching across multiple catalogues?
It is of course easy enough to change to another catalogue and search that if you wish

Thanks for checking. Shame Adobe did not add this feature which is what stopped me using LR2.Originally posted by Stephen View PostNot so far as I can tell. Each catalogue you create seems to contain info only on the folders and keywords you have used in that catalogue.

I am interested in the tethered feature. I guess this is camera make/model specific. Is there any list of supported cameras in LR3?Originally posted by Patrick View PostJust had a play with the Tethered feature.

Re: Lightroom 3 now officially launched
You obviously have more than one catalogue. I'd be interested to know why you consider it important to do that. I used to have 2 different ones for personal and business photography. Now though everything is together in one catalogue and I use different external HDsOriginally posted by Invicta View PostThanks for checking. I have two streams of thought as to why use multiple catalogues:Originally posted by Stephen View PostYou obviously have more than one catalogue. Now though everything is together in one catalogue and I use different external HDs
1) Performance - a single catalogue must reach a stage when there are so many images that performance slows down
2) Availability - if one catalogue got corrupted at least you would not lose all your edits.
I have just obtained a free copy of Capture One so considering which way to go: Capture One & Expression Media or Lightroom 3.
I guess the best way would be to give each a good trial run. Lightroom has the advantage of a single user interface but I have some concerns about how it manages things under the hood.
