  • Burghley Sculpture Garden.

I'm somewhat unsure about posting here, but as I'm determined to learn, I guess I just have to jump in!

This is one of my personal favourite images. Although most credit belongs to the artist who created the sculpture (Don't know who s/he was - didn't buy the guide book!) I think this photograph adds interest as the sun coming through the sculpture is mirrored by the sun coming through the trees behind, I was particularly pleased with the effect of the light from behind illuminating the eyes.

The original Sculpture, with many more just as intriguing, can be found at Burghley House, Stamford, Lincs. I can recomnmend a visit if you are ever that way.

    Regards,

    Neil

Hi Neil - it's good to see a new face on the forum! You are most welcome indeed.

On my monitor the grass is looking rather cool and the image is quite flat overall. Have you worked on this to correct the original? The conditions look very challenging (bright light and a dark foreground).

Thanks for the feedback- I really appreciate your comments.

I've been back to study my original, and I think you're right about the cool colours - I could have done more on that.

Great site btw- and I'll keep you posted on my progress!

      Regards,

      Neil

          Re: Burghley Sculpture Garden.

          Neil,

You are absolutly right in questioning the presentation of "someonelse's art" and often it is criticised. I have no such critisim, as I see it as your image of an object, no different to any other object. The trick of course is to present the image in a way that conveys your thoughts and feelings for the subject, and you have done just that.

Yes the colours are a bit flat, but that is something that you have accepted and can address. The composition and the passage of the light is handled in the way that you intended and it is a very difficult technique to master. It needs to be approached in a very technical way, exploring various exposures to get the effect that you want to create to be just right. Sometimes with the sun behind a subject passing through trees, a very soft light can be achieved with ND filters and longer exposures. Equally very high speeds and a wide open lens can introduce flare and other effects.

But that's the real fun part and from your picture and the comment you made it seems to me that you have the right approach to getting some great images

Welcome to the forum! An interesting shot! If you do have an editing programme, it may help to add more contrast or darken the shot a tad! Taking shots into the sun is always difficult!

                  Hi Neil -

I like that pic and I'm sure when you have 'worked' on it it could be one of my favourite sculpture pix.
