  • Playing with cutouts

I was very interested in the demo of Vertus Fluid Mask. It dose seem very good at removing backgrounds. As you can't save the results from the demo version, I thought I would try one with my existing software. Here is the result plus the original for comparison. What do you think.

I think it's a bit jagged around the beak but this could easily be smoothed out. On the whole it's pretty good.
Be nice to see the same image done with VFM for comparison

It dose do a better job I must admit, but then again it cost quite a bit for the plugin unlock code. May be tempted depends on whether I can convince myself I need it.

That's a good job indeed. How long did it take you?

Not a bad attempt, but the Fluid Mask do have a feathered edge where the edge pixels is half transparent for soft edges and it hard for clean ones. The major difference is FM have a artificial intelligence build in, it first by auto detect the whole image, then let you decides afterwards what setting (recommendation is given after the initial process) and areas too keep or to delete.

Took longer to re-size and post than to create. About ten minutes using the find edge tool. Should have feathered a little more but It was getting past my bed time so didn't go back to try again. VFM does offer more control but then I would expect it to.

It seems to me (but I may be wrong) that some of your black fill invaded the feathers i.e. there are black spots in the feathers of the second pic which were not there (or not as big) in the first. Like the idea though and definitely a more homogenous background would improve that picture.

Re-worked this with a bit more care. Time taken 25 minuets for Ian's information. Have changed background as suggested and agree this is better. Still looking into Vertus Fluid Mask. With demo version was able to achieve similar result in 9 minutes. Wish it would let you save so I could compare images side by side. Posted extra large to show cutout detail.
