  • Grasshopper

Cleaning the bird feeders when my wife brought my attention to this, dashed to get the camera and macro lens, its about an inch long. Shot off a few quick frames then tried to get closer but it flew away.

This is about a 50% crop.

I like the composition, Patrick - the surrounding greenery works nicely to frame the insect. I'm a sucker for green hues anyway!

I agree with Ian, about the greens. A pleasing photo.

Can I ask. Was this with the 7D? Also, what macro lens are you using?

Thanks both I was worried whether the hopper was big enough in the frame.

Yes it was my new 7D and the Sigma EX 105mm f2.8 macro lens.

Excellent capture Patrick - another one with the Sigma 105 f2.8. As I said in a previous post, I just can't get to grips with this lens and rarely achieve a good sharp shot

And so jealous of you with the 7D!

            Are you using Auto Focus?
I find with macro work where you focus is important, the depth of field is so shallow. For this reason I tend to use manual focus and choose precisely the spot I think will give best overall focus.
In this case I focused on the head, used f11, and had the camera on a tripod.

I never bother trying for macro, without a tri-pod. Too many misses!

Patrick. How are you finding the the AF area selection mode on the 7D ?
ie the single point AF, Zone AF, Auto select, etc and all it's variants. ?

Imteresting. Isnt it. Nothing like this on my 50D

Just like a car - lots of moving parts.

I'll join the others in saying a superb shot.
