  • A nasty Nikon lens !

Is there anybody who can give me a clue or two?

I want to remove an adapter from Nikon 105mm/f2.8 lens. I attached the adapter two years ago in order to use the lens for Canon 20D.

When I tried to detach the adapter a few times later, I made a mistake repeatedly and tried to rotate the lens counter clockwise. I simply forgot that I had to rotate it just clockwise to remove it.

Now the adapter is just sticky and do not move either way. - a reason why I think Nikon is stubborn.

I'd try putting the lens barrel in a vice, you'll need tofasten it tight though. Then get a pair of Mole grips, clamp it tight on the adaptor, then put a hollow steel tube over the handle of the Mole grips to give you extra leverage and turn clockwise. Its sure to get the adaptor off, though I can't vouch for the condition of the lens after

Thanks Stephen for the kind advice. It seems you know quite well that such an adapter is more priceless these days than some of old lenses - this one is non D type which I got 20 years ago or so when I was also a Nikon user.

Actually I have to say it is you that makes me want to remove the adapter from this lens. I just wanted to use another Nikon tele lens for 20D - not 400mm but 300mm and i have an x1.4 adapter. Long enough for me though I can not use AF. You know I usually do not take a pic of something moving swiftly.

Maybe wrap it in a towel first, or even some butyl rubber or something to offer a little protection.

Many thanks for your comments, Stephen and Ben.
After yesterday's trial, I gave another try this morning.

I think something prevents the adapter from turning. I'm lost in thought and thinking about to remove the screws shown in the pics bellow.

Would it be a reasonable try? - i wonder. Or something that you should not do by all means? - I appreciate any opinions from anybody.

I think I was powerful enough while trying to remove it - by using all I can imagine of - towels, non-slippery rubber cloth, directly by my hands ...
I made an experiment using another lens and it was successfully taken to pieces (the last pic.)

Though I have to come clean Yoshi and admit that my advice and comments were made completely 'tongue in cheek' but my humour seems to have been lost even on Ben

Take note George, English humour can be lost even on the English sometimes.

Yoshi, I hope you don't damage your lens in your attempts to remove this adaptor. On the other hand it sounds like a pretty old lens and surely it doesn't owe you anything

                  Yoshi,

There are some products used for loosening stuck threaded materials. Some are called something like a penetrating oil, and sometimes several shots of a product like WD-40 can penetrate the connection enough to get that first movement.

Also, my hand strength is not much, so I use a piece of rubberized material that gives extra grip to bottle tops and such. You might try some of this, too, before going to brute force.

                  Good Luck!

Thank you for your advice, Joe. I have already tried the rubberized material and am almost inclined to the said brute force. - but after reading your suggestion I think I will give a second thought before actually doing /destroying it. If time permits, I go to an authentic camera shop and ask about the suggested oil. thanks again.

Yoshi - have you considered maybe it got cross-threaded and that's a possible reason why it got stuck fast.

My husband had a big problem maybe 2-3 years ago when a filter was stuck on one of his old secondhand 'bargain' lenses. It transpired that the thread had been crossed by the previous owner.

He eventually managed to get it off by gently working at it with pliers - protecting the lens and filter with rubber bands and using rubber gloves. I think he also used some sort of lubricant but neither of us can remember the exact details.

                      Good luck with it.

I suggest a drop of WD40 or other penetrating oil, but do not spray it on. Spray it onto a spoon or something first and then spread it around the thread, working it in with your finger little by little.
Leave it for a half hour and then have another good go at it.

As I have not got the suggested oil, I did not do another try today.
A simple and strange question, but half serious from a strayed and lost in thought guy, does cooking oil work? how about butter?

I wouldn't like to use cooking oil or butter myself so I asked my husband and he says "definitely not a good idea!"

However - he suggested " a dry graphite lubricant" could be worth trying. He says it's used for lubricating telescopes and it should be available in hardware shops or maybe an ironmonger's.

I'm told it might help gradually lubricate and loosen the threads if you just rub it around the edges and give it a bit of time, then maybe give it 2-3 more applications.

Sorry I can't persuade him to post here (or anywhere else) himself but the above is what he dictated for me to type.

No I would not use the veg oil. Anyway it would not penetrate as required. A light lubricant such as that used for lubricanting sewing machines might do the job.
