  • RAW & JPEG Transfer To PC

    Hello All-

I have a Canon 400D. I tried to use the RAW & JPEG option. When trying to transfer the images to my PC it puts them in a folder as two copies of the same jpeg rather than one of each. When I shoot only in RAW they transfer as RAW with no problems. I have consulted the manual for the camera and it seems like I am doing everything right. Does anybody have any thoughts on why this is happening?

    Thank You!
    Dana

You should have a .JPG file and a .CR2 file for each image. How are you transferring your pictures from the camera or card?

      Hi Ian-
I am opening the camera in "my computer" and then copy and paste the images to another folder. This way worked when I shot only in RAW but now I get 2 .jpg and no .cr2 Does that help?
      Thanks!

I would have to question your methods here Dana, though I am at a loss to understand why you are not getting a .CR2 file.

Basically though to Copy and Paste the contents of a memory card seems an odd way of transferring your files. Especially when normal Windows protocols would suggest that dragging and dropping them is the way to go. It seems however that if you are getting 2 .jpg files then some conversion is taking place during the Copy and Paste. Just as a trial, try a drag and drop and see if there is any difference

Hi Stephen, I see what you mean about the drag and drop....problem is, I am not even seeing a .CR2 file in the camera....what I mean is that when I open the camera in "my computer" it is showing 2 copies of the .jpg even there. I don't know what to make of it.....

Do I presume you are connecting the camera to the PC via USB cable? Have you tried using a card reader instead?

It would seem that transferring Raw files without going through canons software is a non-starter. Ians idea to use a card reader is the only other alternative. Try Google "transferring RAW to win XP" there are others with the same problem.

PS Linux will let you do it via a USB direct, but that's no help if you have XP.

Dana I always use a card reader, but I've just tried accessing it through My Computer, this is a screen grab of the window

Ron I never use Canons software. Just drag and drop the contents of the card onto the desktop using Windows Explorer as a navigation tool

So long as you are not using the 'Auto' settings this should not happen.
When I download raw & jpg they are placed into the same folder with the raw id being cr2. However..when viewing the files in IE the cr2 files do not open. This goes the other way when you open up the raw editing software, just the cr2 files are visible and they open as thumbnails.
I no longer use the dual option because of the total size required for each single image.

I think you have hit the nail on the head Pops, Dana must be using Auto mode, and even though she has the camera set to Raw+JPG the Auto mode overides this and produces the JPG only.

Since I sold my Fugi camera I no longer have RAW. I do recall having the same problem with that and had to get a card reader. Never tried the drag & drop way, will have to give it a go.
