  • First ice and snow, then drought and now flooding!

Two years ago we had near record freezing conditions, then there was a drought and now we have had virtually constant rain and winds (and yesterday some hail stones) and more flooding than I can remember since living here for nearly 25 years. The River Gade at the bottom of the hill on which our road is on has flooded over the road that crosses it at some points for the first time that I can remember. No chance to photograph the flood water as I was driving through it this morning! Maybe later...

That is why the weather is the most popular subject in the UK. Always something different.

We're having another strange winter. We had a foot of snow New Years Eve, it was -22C with a wind chill of -27 yesterday. It's warmed up to -4C today but we're forecast to get another 6 to 8 inches of snow tomorrow with snow squalls to follow on Monday and Tuesday.
Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it. Terry Pratchett.

        That's cold!

Did you manage to keep the house warm during such extremely cold weather? Could your heating cope?

The heating was working overtime but houses are designed for those temps. When I lived in Saskatchewan I was out shooting at -40. -40 being the same in C and F.

We're under a snowfall warning for today and a snow squall watch for Monday and Tuesday.

I read a news report somewhere about people in Canada having power outages in extreme cold spells. It's to be hoped they have power back again by now. Fingers crossed your snowfall won't be too bad.

Our own weather warning is for more rain and strong winds with an alert for more flooding near here. We've been lucky so far - no flooding and no power cuts in our immediate vicinity, thank goodness.

Parts of eastern Canada were hit with freezing rain which brought down trees and power lines just before Christmas. Some areas got 40mm of ice build up. We only got a millimeter or two around here.

Have you ever heard or experienced a frost quake boom (cryoseism) ?

                I'd be terrified because I'm a wuss!

The sun is out Honest! I even have the window open here in the office as it's a bit stuffy in here this morning

Really - I am not joking (this time!)...

I believe you! We've been having sunny spells to, though none this morning. We sometimes open the patio door too, the patio door facing north as the strong winds are blasting from the south. I dry the washing on an airer next to the (partly) opened patio door.

The thing is a sunnier, slighty warmer day has been followed by an icy night. It was sunny yesterday between daybreak and approximately 11.00am but it was also frosty and very cold, though the sun on the glass possibly saved us a unit or two on the energy bill (which is huge!).

First day back at work yesterday. Despite being under a bunch of weather warnings and watches I got to work and home. They pulled all the ploughs off the roads yesterday evening. Today all provincial highways and county roads are closed in the area so a day off work. We're under blizzard and wind chill warnings with the wind chill forecast to be -35 later today, it's only -27 this morning.

I don't envy you, that sounds as though it's likely to be unpleasant and dangerous for anyone who has to be out and about. I was looking at reports images and video reports from the US earlier today and people really do need to be adequately dressed and protected to avoid frostbite.

You take care, stay warm in those awful (though probably 'pretty') conditions.

It just continues to throw torrents of rain on us here. The ground is saturated, the skies dull and grey. Just brewed up a huge 'kettle 'of fresh veggie soup and a load of croutons in the fat fryer - winter fodder to warm the soul.

I've never heard a frost quake. I have heard ice on lakes in Saskatchewan and Ontario make a variety of creaks, groans and squeals. The first time I heard them I couldn't work out what they were.

The roads are still closed around here. At times we can't see to the end of our drive.

24 hours later and the roads are still closed although the ploughs are out trying to open them. By the sounds of it there's abandoned vehicles as well as drifts blocking the roads. Our power flickered overnight but some areas around here were without power overnight and aren't forecast to get power back until tonight.

                              What a nightmare!

Mercifully you still have power but it must be horrendous for those without any power in that sort of extreme cold. It's to be hoped they at least have an open fire or wood burners.

It must be horrible, also dangerous, for those who have no other choice than to go out to work and try to clear the roads, restore the power etc.
