Hi I am another recruit from tiscali and recognise a lot of the faces here from there - I can see this board has quite a number of advantages not least of which is that you can post pics with higher resolution and also I like the more international membership - makes things more interesting. Although I live in the UK I grew up in Africa where I started out with photography as a child (trying to imitate my bird photographer father) with a film 35 mm camera of course. Although I have scanned some of those pics the quality is not great because the negs had deteriorated.

I converted to digital in 2004 when I got a little 2meg S&P camera as a present and I can tell you some of my best pics have been taken with that. I then bought a 5meg S&P which is nice and light and recently have bought my first dSLR which is bit heavier to lug around and I am still getting used to it so have not produced anything too good yet. I continue to learn and boards like this besides being fun and good company are a great source for learning stuff.

I am a secretary by profession - actually I do it to survive but when the weekend comes around I'm out and about with my camera!

Hi Sue, welcome to the DPNow forums, I think you are right in your comments, stuff here tends to be more targeted when it comes to digital photography. We have a wealth of experience and a good variety of skills, and I'm sure Ian won't be too embarrased if I call him 'our man on the inside' The filesize upload limit is 250kb so that should be ample. Hope to see you post and contribute to discussion.

Welcome Sue! Where in Africa did you grow up? By the way, your 35mm negatives may be in better state than you imagine. The main problem with scanning negatives is the quality of the scanner. If you used a flat bed scanner, it's more than likely you haven't done the negs justice.

          Hi Sue

Glad to see you here, and hopefully some of your weekend work.

When I saw spl first I thought it had something to do with football

            Re: spl

            Thanks all for warm welcome.

Ian I had the negs scanned by a photographic shop - I made sure that they gave me the high res ones i.e. 6megs and some of them are ok but others need plenty of attention on my photoshop elements programme and even then a few seem irredeemable. I don't possess a scanner myself but for future reference it may be useful if you could let me know what to go for if I do decide to get one - thanks.

Harry I had to laugh when you said my initials reminded you of Scottish Premier League - actually you are not so far off the mark as my father's ancestors are from that part of the world or possibly just south of the border in Cumbria which is the only place I have ever been where people don't have a problem spelling my surname - Longrigg.

            Cheers

Sorry forgot to answer this. I was born in Kenya where my father immigrated in his misguided youth and served for many years in the British Kenya regiment during the Mau Mau war. Then when I was about 5 or 6 the family immigrated to Cape Town South Africa where my mother comes from. But actually I was priveledged to have travelled widely all over the Southern African sub continent including Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) Namibia (then South West Africa) Botswana, Mozambique as well as to virtually all the major wild life areas in South Africa itself. this was because my parents took us every year on a long 3 - 4 trip to some or other game reserve actually usually more than one.
