  • Archangel's "Hello" to this new forum

I'm 38 years old and I am from Greece and live here in Athens.
I studied Electrical Engineering in USA and Computer Engineering in UK.
I first started with photography approximately 20 years ago, with my first serious camera being a Canon AE-1.

Photography remains my most favorite hobby untill today.
I take photos for personal use. Occasionaly, I take photos for the Greek Ministry of Tourism, that have been published into tourist handbook guides and some became postcards.

Regardless of my photographic skills are, there is always space for improvement and this is one of the main reasons I joined this forum.

I hope to have a nice stay here in this forum and I hope you will like some (if not all) of my photos.

    Regards
    ~Archangel ~ (George T.)

    Hello and welcome.

I'd already noticed your panoramas in the gallery - very nice and very good they are too.

Fantastic George, great to have you here. You know I have never been to Greece, though my youngest son has so I will no doubt enjoy seeing some of your shots taken in and around Athens.

I imagine that like many other European countries, digital photography has really become popular in Greece. How do you find buying cameras and other digital equipment in Athens. Do the shops offer digital printing as much as they have done recently in the UK.

As a matter of fact I've just been reading about and looking at the latest news reports of serious floods in Northern Greece - moving South too. One or two reports say Athens is under threat and a state of emergecy has been declared. I trust you're safe where you are! Hopefully you'll stay dry.

            Hi Stephen,

            Thanks for the warmth welcome.
Indeed digital photography is very popular in Greece.
Yes, there are a lot of photography shops that offer digital printing and digital accessories. You can find these digital shops even on small islands that you will get your photos printed within an hour.

The digital camera shops are really many here in Greece. You can find any camera model and accessories at very competitive prices compared to other European countries.
The digital camera market is much bigger here actually (maybe because of the much tourism we have), compared to what I saw in UK between 2001-2004 where I was doing my Computer Science degree

If you ever visit Greece, you will not have a single problem with your photographic needs. You can find photographic shops everywhere (I have around a dozen around my neigbourhood here in Athens).

Here you can get an idea approxiamtely about the prices of the digital cameras here in Greece (the website is in Greek, but if you click on any camera brand, you will see the models with their prices sold here).

Κατερέλος | Φωτογραφικές μηχανές, Βιντεοκάμερες, Εμπόριο φωτογραφικού εξοπλισμού - www.katerelos.gr

And here is one on the very best Greek photographic websites with thousands of members, nice photos, news. forum, etc...

(The site is also in Greek, but clicking on the left on "Wallpapers" you can see some nice photos too.

            Anyway,
We can talk even more details about that in the future.

Regards and thanks again for the welcome comments.
            George

                Hi Pol,

As you probably know, Greece has mostly warm and good weather. Rain to us here is something that we see around 30 days per year approximately. When we sometimes get intense showers we call it emergency!

It is exactly like when Northern countries call the 25-28 Celcius degrees "Heatwave", while heatwave for the Greeks is from 40C and up.

                Thanks though for your interest.

                Regards
                George

I remember the AE-1 very well, having used an earlier (and much heavier!) FTb with breech-lock lenses! Then there was the AE-1 Program and, of course the A1.

I previously mentioned I was in Athens with Julia in January last year. The locals are very friendly and these three ladies demanded (in a very nice way) that their picture be taken:

Ian, I still have the AE-1 but lent it to my brother in law since he was getting involved with film printing. Now he's got two kids and hardly time even for one digital photo! Try to enjoy myself the photography sport before me and my wife start kid's production.

Hope to see you again in Greece soon
