Hi deeds! Just seen your diamond in the rough shot in your gallery. It's fascinating - can you tell us a bit about the subject matter? A jewellers that has seen better times?

Also, what aspect of your photography are you looking to improve?

Re: Hello from a new member

Hello to everyone and Thanks for welcoming me to the forum. Ian the photo in question has alot of history for me and the small and charming little town in which I live in. That jewlery store had been in business here since I was a teenager and my Mother would only purchase from there. I stumbled upon it in an abondoned Cheese Factory in our small town and due to the fact that it has only been a little over one year ago that I lost my Mother, naturally memories of being a young girl and going there with my Mother came rushing in. As to your other question, I would like to expand on every aspect in my self taught amateur photography. I am still learning, as I am sure it reflects that in some of my photos......however, I will take it a day at a time and I never leave home without my camera bag!!

Thanks for sharing your bit of personal history with us

And good for you in your ambitions for your photography and you are already doing the right thing by bringing your camera with you so you shouldn't miss unexpected photo opportunities; a basic tip for photographers that I wish I personally remembered more often.

There are dozens of experienced photographers here who I'm sure would be very keen to help if you have any questions.

It would really help if we could know roughly what you know and don't know. You have a DSLR and its standard zoom lens, which is a good start. What do you use for editing your photos software-wise?

Basically it's essential to understand exposure, which means the interaction between light, ISO sensitivity, aperture settings and shutter speed. Once you understand how these interact then everything else gets easier. Later we can move onto composition, the creative use of focus, categories of photography like portraiture, action, portraiture, macro, still-life, abstract, etc.
