Patrick Hickey's portrait, taken outdoords during a steam rally, is exceptionally true to life and has a wonderful human tonality. Find out how Patrick came about the picture and how he tackled capturing his man. Nice one Patrick. I suppose the judges don't like it because of the cropped head or something equally banal. Frankly though I think its a great shot I find it difficult to look at because of the eye contact. But thats my problem

I reckon the judges are intimidated by the subject Or do they prefer portraits of young women instead of old men?

Well this is one of the best POTD shots selected so far. I like every thing about this image. Well worth you following him to get the shot. I have a local farmer who has a full white beard. Have seen him drive by in his tractor. One day I hope to get a shot of him. These guys are so full of character. Well done Patrick.

A wonderful shot, Patrick.
I know exactly what Stephen means when he mentions the eye contact from the old man. It's the superb eye contact that mesmerises me with this picture. I also love the way his pipe is cushioned on his beard. Superb details!
Excellent post processing too - one of my all time favourites from your gallery, along with 'Sisters', the street shot of fella in the rain and the one of the gorgeous blonde model with the striking brown eyes.
