Re: EC ruling on "What is a Camcorder"
According to the EC, it's likely that a 4.9% additional tariff will be imposed on imports of doigital still cameras with a movie mode function if it is capable of recording a single clip of at least half an hour. Read the full PIC press release for more detailed information on the guidelines.
At the moment, you can usually record around 5-6 minutes on a 1GB memory card. Most consumer cameras are limited to 2GB or 4GB cards at present, so they will be exempt from the EC directive, but 8GB SD cards are going to be widely available in the not too distant future, with 16GB cards next year, capable of recording almost two hours of video footage.
So just how do you classify a still digital camera? By what memory cards are available at the time of import or what's in the box, or the capacity of memory cards in the future?
