  • Picture of the Day, Tuesday 19th December 2006

He calls it a snapshot, but we call it a very fine, soft focus, monochrome portrait. Is this false modesty on the part of Ron Clarke, the photographer behind today's DPNow Picture of the Day? See the picture and read the story behind the shot. You, too, could be featured in the DPNow POTD and our forthcoming Picture of the Month selection. Just register, for free, on the DPNow forum for instant access to our free user gallery. All our POTDs are selected from user galleries - you could be next.

Congrats on your POTD Ron. No one can deny this is a very charming and well produced portrait of your grandaughter. It also proves the point that expensive gear and software is not needed to produce great results.

Yep, that's a delightful photo, Ron. I hope your grandaughter is pleased with it too - tell her 'Aunty Polly' says she's very cute.

Thank you Stephen and Pol for your kind remarks. What pleased me most about being chosen for POTD was that It was produced Mainly with Free Software. I'm not against paying mind you, in fact I'm seriously considering Photoshop CS2. The point is, there are quite a few new digital photographers put off of editing by the cost and complexity of such programmes. My message to them is start with the simple free ones and progress to the bigger powerful programs later. The very thought of CS2 used to frighten me, now it looks quite manageable.
Pol I'll tell little Becky Auntie Polly sends her love.
