  • Apple announces Aperture 3.01

Here is a summary or excerpt from an article that has just been published on DPNow:

Apple has announced a large batch of improvements and fixes that comprises Apple Aperture 3.01. A much overdue move to support RAW file formats for some of the more recent Sony Alpha DSLRs, as well as the Micro Four Thirds Olympus Pen E-P1/2, and Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 RAW cameras, as well as recent Pentax models is included.

    Re: Apple announces Aperture 3.01

Stephen has commented on the new geotagging Places feature of Aperture 3 in the thread about Casio's prototype hybrid GPS camera here:

This is where you will find all the latest news from the annual PMA photo trade show. Discuss the lates cameras, lenses, software and services from PMA.

Another feature of Aperture 3 that has got some people excited is face recognition. Already available in some cameras, notably some models from Panasonic Lumix, face recognition goes beyond face detection by actually linking an identity to the face detected. Aperture can now do this. Lightroom can't, but Adobe has the technology because the latest version of Photoshop Elements has this feature.

Which all kinda begs the question as to whether Adobe will consider something similar for the eagerly awaited Lightroom 3

Aperture and Lightroom are aimed at professionals. I have had a look at some Mac forums and I think opinion is split on whether face recognition is a pro feature or a consumer one. But the geo-tagging support is definitely of use to some pros. Lightroom's implementation is now too simple when you compare it to Aperture's but it wouldn't take much to beef Lightroom's geo-tagging support up to support multiple images and locations, plus log tracking.

Adobe are working very hard on the image quality side of things on Lightroom. Aperture has had some upgrades in version 3 regarding distortion and chromatic aberration fixing, but I think Lightroom will be ahead on noise management, and a few other things... we'll just have to wait and see!
