  • Anaheim PMA 2010 show preview

Here is a summary or excerpt from an article that has just been published on DPNow:

The annual international PMA photo trade show is facing tough times, with several big names not appearing this year. Hardly any UK magazines are sending reporters this year, but we will be there to find out if PMA has a future, as well as reporting back from the companies, large and small, who will be exhibiting at this year's show in Anaheim, next door to Disneyland California.

    HI Ian,
Trade shows are big money events and to see a major one becoming unpopular to the participants, means that there is something going on behind the scenes. Anaheim was a quaint Southern California town when I first saw it and I watched it develop and build up, filling in the blanks and become grid locked. Still, you should have good weather.
New products are one thing, but the state of the saturated market and the direction of its trends, now that digital photography doesn't have to justify being as good as film, would be as interesting. We have lived through one major change in the medium of photography and watched a whole new market structure take hold, as the old structure crumbled and it makes you wonder if there is a second shoe ready to hit the floor above. A good line of investigation would be what can we expect in the second decade of the century, not only in technology, but in market approach.
Anyway, I hope you have a totally awsome trip to Orange County.

Hi Bob, I mentioned competition from CP+ Japan as well as CES, but there is a third pressure on PMA too; CeBIT in Germany. This isn't a photo specific show, but it's another resource drain for companies we expect to see at PMA.

I'm a veteran of Orlando and Las Vegas shows, but Anaheim is new to me, although I did visit Disneyland about 35 years ago!

I'll certainly be asking a lot of questions at the show!

        Hi IAn,
The last time that I was in Orange County was 13 years ago...a busines trip hopping from office to office.
I noticed today that the rumory site is showing a graphic from an possible Oly teaser on something that will evolve on 28 Feb. Based on your comments, the fact that the graphic shows 3 bars over 4 and that 28 Feb is a Sunday....I'd say someone is out pulling legs.....
