  • Digital Photography 101 - the Levels tool is easier than you might think

Here is a summary or excerpt from an article that has just been published on DPNow:

Here is part 3 of the DPNow.com Digital Photography 101 series aimed at anyone who wants to improve his or her technical understanding of digital photography. Today, we use video clips to introduce the usefulness of the ubiquitous Levels tool and see how it relates to histograms, which were covered in part 2. And it's not that difficult!

    Hi Ian,
Another good presentation and the videos do give an added dimention to what you are explaining. A good basic tool and a good intro to using it.

Thanks Bob. There's no denying that the multimedia aspect of this article has plenty of room for improvement

I hope that the target audience are able to absorb the subject without being intimidated, which is why it's presented in small chunks.

Next week I will continue the series but also have something for the more advanced users - a look at how to interpret lens MTF charts and explore the qualities of lens contrast versus resolution.

I would think this subject would be of interest to your good self

We don't see it so much these days, but I can remember a lot of debates concerning German optics versus Japanese, Leica vs Zeiss, Nikon vs Leica, etc.

        Hi Ian -

This is the first of the series I have viewed and I'm impatient to get back to look at series one and two.
If they are as good as the levels presentation just viewed it will be most pleasing.
You have presented the levels aspect of post production in a relaxed and understandable fashion.

        Thanks so much.

        Regards. Barr1e

          Hi Ian,
Yes, MTF charts would be a good subject. The debates still go on, mostly withing the Leica M communities. Sometimes they are brand centered with the Leica, Zeiss and CV lenses and with digital it is between pre-aspheric and new aspheric versions of lenses.
The impact of micro contrast in lenses and the AA filter on sensors on the final image and sharpening strategies, would be a good subject, considering that the current trend in sensors is to lower the AA filtering, while increasing MP.
What the MTF charts don't tell you is another good subject...
