interesting that they have moved from CF card to SD card....bit of a blow for anyone wanting to upgrade from a previous entry level canon DSLR.

What's the logic behind changing card types I wonder, I don't see that cost, physical size or memory size are factors - is there a technical reason for it? Personally I'd rather handle CF cards as they're more a bit more robust and a reasonable size to handle for those with hands akin to a bunch of bananas (like mine!).

However, as already mentioned, given the cost of cards nowadays it's not really a major issue having to change?

Having only relatively recently bought my 10MP 40D I absolutely refuse to read any reviews that compare picture quality between the 40D and the new 450D

Not to mention us wildlife fans! handling a tiny SD card with freezing mits is a pain!

My camera uses both CF and SD cards. I tend to use the SD card most of the time, for a bloke with big hands I don't find it a problem, but the benefits are worthwhile in terms of speed. The SD card writes and downloads much quicker. I'd think the solution with the new 10-12mp cameras is to simply use a bigger card so you don't have to change it as often. Memory is cheap and I don't see it as an issue

SD is very robust and takes up much less space both in the bag, and the camera. From an engineering point of view the SD connections are smaller and should be more robust than a series of pins. The camera designer can be more flexible about the location of the SD card and equipment around it.

Other things are energy requirements (the CF device could be a hard drive based version), and the possible heat generation.

Advantages include most modern electronic devices have an SD slot, or a derivative of it. With an adaptor the mobile phones SD card could be called into service.

I was a little surprised that Nikon didn't switch to SD on the D300 as they have it on the models below it.

                    Re: New Canon EOS 450D

I am in the same boat as Stephen as in my camera uses both cards. I do use both cards in the camera epically if I am going to be out all day at the sand racing or hill climbs but I do prefer the sd cards as its just down to ease of use ie it fits straight into the side of my laptop. Having said that I do like the size of the cf cards and they do look like they are more robust. I have not looked at the size of the new 450d but I guess it will have something to do with that and squeezing all the workings into the body also this camera will be aimed at the people who will upgrade from point and shoots which will mostly use sd cards.
