Photokina - Leica M8 news and photos
Above is Steve Lee, the newest board member of Leica Camera AG, holding the new M8 digital rangefinder at the Photokina press conference. Mr.Lee was recruited from Best Buy (low cost retail chain) in the US to manage Leica's corporate structure and strategy. Although Best Buy may not seem like a good fit with Leica, prior to his 5 years at Best Buy, he was at IBM for 16 years.
Of technical interest is Leica's challenge to make old analogue lenses work with digital sensors. To avoid corner shading problems they have had to use a complicated solution that involves off-set microlenses above the photosites (pixels) towards the periphery of the frame. The diagram above shows the theory.
And how about this for a zoom lens? This 21-28mm (28-37 equivalent) optic is optimised for three preset focal length positions, 21mm, 24mm and 28mm.
