  • Samsung launches the new NX Mini Smart Camera

Here is a summary or excerpt from an article that has just been published on DPNow:

Samsung has unveiled a brand new mirrorless interchangeable lens system camera, or compact system camera, with the emphasis on 'compact'. Called the Samsung NX Mini, Samsung appears to be following in the wake of Nikon 1 and Pentax Q, both of whom have chosen to pursue the route of mirrorless system cameras sporting much smaller sensors than anyone else. With a smaller sensor you can build a really small camera with tiny lenses. Samsung has opted to go for the 1 inch sensor, which is the same size used by Nikon in the Nikon 1 system. This has a cropping factor of 2.7, so a lens of say, 50mm focal length on a standard full frame 135 format camera will have the same field of view as an 18.5mm NX Mini lens.

A new camera system with a new lens mount used to be a once in a decade or so kind of event, but in the last 10-11 years we have had:

    Four Thirds
    Micro Four Thirds
    Pentax Q
    Nikon 1
    Samsung NX
    Samsung NX Mini
    Canon EOS M
    Leica S
    Sony E-mount

..and maybe more (apologies if I have missed out any!).

    Amazing!

      Hi Ian,
So, we now have 3 mfrs romancing the inch
I suspect the reason this sensor size is being chosen for these new products is that it can do video/movie and use all the pixels with no need for downsizing. This gives good IQ and speed features for the still side. This is sort of the mfrs' vision of where the market "might" go.
I only do movies by accident but the video from the Nikon V2 is very good and I can snap stills while recording video. The first time that we accidently triggered the video caught all our discussion about what was wrong with the camera and the stills snapped to see if it still worked ......what fun and I learned how to delete movies, too.

I remember the furore when Canon dropped the FD mount. Now FD lenses have a new lease of life on mirrorless cameras.
