  • Olympus Stylus XZ-10 brief hands-on preview

Here is a summary or excerpt from an article that has just been published on DPNow:

Olympus has produced a smaller and lighter version of its Stylus XZ-2 premium compact camera. In fact the camera is all- new with a new 5x 26-130mm (equivalent) zoom lens and a smaller CMOS sensor. But the touch screen is a resistive type and it not longer articulates and the clever XZ control ring no longer works for manual focus. We look at the benefits and compromises of the new baby XZ-10.

Re: Olympus Stylus XZ-10 brief hands-on preview

I am interested in this camera because my Olympus C4040 Zoom and LG Rumor 2 cell phone cameras are due for an upgrade, and I use them enough where it is warranted. My other DSLR cameras that I use the most are the E-520 and E-3 with a variety of HG lenses.

For a compact carry with you camera, I am thinking about a used/refurbished XZ-1, possibly a used EPL2 (I'm a not really interested in micro 4/3rds because I don't think the m43 lenses would be pocketable), used/refurbished TG-1 (underwater capability would be a plus though not essential), and the XZ-10 new. For me, the extra cost of the XZ-2 would be better used toward a used E-5 or a new E-5 successor.

I know there are some concerns about the smaller sensor size of the XZ-10 (The XZ-1 and XZ-2 sensors are 50% larger in area) but we probably won't know until Easter when the first production samples are due in.

Re: Olympus Stylus XZ-10 brief hands-on preview

Since I posted, I have missed a couple of opportunities where I really could have used a compact camera that was with me at the time. So, I ordered a refurbished XZ-1 from the GetOlympus US store. I had a discount from doing an online survey and got free shipping, so not too bad of a deal. The specifications of the XZ-1 are good enough for my purposes, and I will be able to shoot RAW and process it in Aperture now whereas it would be several months before RAW files from the XZ-10 would be supported.
