After assimilating various sources of information I am coming to a few conclusions about the EOS M. I'm sure image quality will be excellent with the 18MP sensor we have seen before. Canon has a patchy record on kit lens quality, but I expect the EF-M 18-55 to be decent, as should the 22mm pancake. Autofocus, though, looks like it's very sluggish compared to rival CSCs, which really surprises me. I'm sure I will like the multi-touch screen and the overall industrial design of the EOS M looks high class. Anyone middle-aged and older will struggle with a camera that doesn't have a viewfinder unless they're wearing their reading specs, so this camera will appeal more to younger people. We'll have to see about pricing as the list price is high. A Lumix GF5 is smaller, lighter, has a built in flash and is at least a couple of hundred quid cheaper. A Lumix G3 has a viewfinder and is only a little dearer than a GF5.

Is anyone here tempted by an EOS M? Naturally the provision of a mount adapter to enable the use of EF and EF-s lenses must be attractive to EOS shooters. Maybe lots of Powershot G9s, G10s, etc. will appear on eBay in October when the EOS M ships

It does not appeal to me Ian for the same reason the Sony Nex did not appeal.

A Compact System Camera is just that, a compact system that includes lenses and there is nothing that looks compact about even these short focal length lenses and I hate to think what the prime and zoom telephoto lenses will be like, but I'm guessing not compact.

But I'm sure they will sell if only to the die hard Canon users that want to use their huge original lenses on it.

Canon declined to show the lens road map. That will affect the sales as well especially to new EOS users. For existing EOS DSLR users, yes, it will be different.

As I said before, Canon has approached this launch in a very unenthusiastic manner. It's like they have done a routine launch of a new Powershot rather than introduced a brand new system. I can only deduce that they don't want the EOS M to distract customers from their EOS DSLRs.
