Re: Zack Arias Photographer Workshop - Free 6pm Tonight

Got cam back today, ive done some testing and its not good, its marginally better, I have to dial in a +20 in the af fine tune to get anywhere near sharp on 4 diferent lenses and these are:
    nikon 50mm 1.4 afs
    nikon 18-200 vr
    nikon 17-55 2.8
    sigma 70-200 2.8

but thats it Im at the max adjustment, I rekon about +30 would do it.

I pretty fed up now as I trusted fixation to have calibrated correctly, they obviously just used something like a kit lens @ 5.6 and adjusted to just within the depth of field of that lens and thats it.
I would have used a 2.8 @ 200mm where you have very little room for error.
It confirms this theory as like I said all 4 lenses need that +20 for anything near. Before it went in the af fine tuning did not make much difference it was that far out.

Ash it might be time for some firm words with Nikon, they authorized the repair so are responsible. Well really is the retail seller in law that is inline first.

Having to make adjustments to the maximum possible is unacceptable.

The most amount of micro focusing I have made +5

I know many Nikon owners at both my photo clubs, in fact its a matter of friendly banter between Canon & Nikon owners to run down the other, but the truth is they are both top quality cameras. You have just been unlucky in getting that rouge bad one.

I suppose I should have gone through camerabox from the off, but all ive done in effect is save them the agro, as they would have had to send the camera to fixation or another authorised repairer anyway.
My opinion is that the new focussing system on the camera is not right and reliable, its new technology not fully tested, but hey nikon won't admit that will they as they would have to recall all d7000's.
I would presume most d7000 are purchased by rich happy amateurs with the kit lens that would never notice the problem, or like you say I have a real duffer, but that does not excuse fixation for their so called repair though! Maybe its that bad its the closest they could get it!
Maybe this thread needs moving or something as its getting a bit long and its nothing to do with the title, at the moment its a vent for my frustration

Ive just emailed fixation explaining its not fixed and sent a copy to nikon via my nikon question thread about the matter, I could not for the life in me find an email address for nikon anywhere on the web to copy them in!

        Thanks for listening/reading
        Ash.

Sorry to hear about your camera problems Ash. Out of curiosity, is the back focus problem showing only when you are using Auto Focus? Are you getting sharp focus if you use manual focus either through the view finder or live view?

          Regards,

          Geoff.

Re: Zack Arias Photographer Workshop - Free 6pm Tonight

Sorry Ash, I don't have a magic fix although you could borrow my big hammer

The only reason I asked was, as I said, just curiosity. I was thinking that if the back focus problem shows only when using Auto focus then it would be possible to do a test by taking an image with the camera on a tripod using auto focus then take the same image using manual focus to see if there is a difference in sharpness.

              Geoff.

I don't use manual focus as a rule in my work, only possiby when doing macro work.
Im still not grassping where ya going with this Geoff.
Does this somehow narrow the problem down in some way?

I think what Geoff may be getting at is, can you get a sharp image with the camera using manual focus? In other works is it capable of sharp focus?

Manual focus and live view is sharp as a tack, infact I would trust the liveview more than my eye manual focusing!

Then it can be nothing else but the AF incorrectly set.

Still curious to know if you tried AF calibration in the camera, Ash?

The D7000 model is only just over a year old, so presumably Ash's example has been sent for a warranty service? If so, and the problem has not been fixed, I wonder if Nikon UK should be looking into this? I can make some investigations if required.

Hi Ian, yes they did do it under warrenty which I did not expect them to actually, fixation has emailed me back this morning saying they can arrange a collection which I have agreed to but not heard anything since. I did state I needed it back before next sunday as I have another marathon to shoot.
this was fixation's reply this morning:

                              Good morning Mr Wignall

Thank you for your e-mail concerning your D7000.
When we carry out a back or front focussing adjustmment we use a calibrated Nikon 50mm F1.4afs lens set at the zero postion on a calibrated D3X, then we use a Nikon angle tool to measure back/front focus position and calibrate accordingly.
Your camera was along way out and the focus postion was corrected quite significantly and I am sorry you do not think it is still correct. I can arrange to have the camera collected and if you would prefer we can check and adjust it or have Nikon do it. The other question is have you used your lenses on another body to check they are ok?
Please advise if you would like me to arrange collection.
                              Regards

Fixation arranged collection on tuesday, and hopefully should have it back tommorow.
Advised they have altered backfocus once again and even included images to prove on a cd
Can't wait, we'll see if their testing is up to the standard of mine
If not then it will be ebay and a canon 5d2 !
