  • DPNow.com Picture of the Day, Friday - 25th February 2011

Here is a summary of today's DPNow Picture of the Day:

Click on the picture to find out more about the photographer and how the picture was taken.

This is a photo from a park in Christchurch, New Zealand, taken by a DPNow member who lives just outside the quake-devastated city. One has to wonder what the scene looks like now, and we also wonder if today's photographer has escaped the worst of the effects of the quake.

As mentioned in the article, our featured POTD photographer is Trevor White, who some of you will recall as ddigit as well as TrevWhite, here on DPNow.

Trevor is from Rangiora, a town that is right next to the earth quake struck New Zealand city of Christchurch. Trevor hasn't been to DPNow since Christmas, so I have no idea if he and his wife, Dianne (another DPNow member) have escaped the worst of the quake. It looks like Rangiora is not too badly affected and, indeed, displaced Christchurch residents are being sent to Rangiora to be looked after.

Anyway, I hope Trevor will be able to enlighten us and I will certainly try to contact him.

I was just thinking about him when the earthquake hit the beautiful city of Christchurch, although I had no idea exactly where he lives in NZ.
Hope he and his family as well as people in NZ as a whole are not badly affected by the quake.

As I live in a country where earthquakes are just a normal thing to exprerience almost daily, the news about earthquakes attracts more concerns among us. I just exprerienced a mild one 15 min. ago which is the second one today.
Firstly mountains and trees growl, then some seconds later the quake comes.
It could be the third one. I feel i might have exprerienced one more while asleep.

Hope your frined is perfectly well Barr1e.

I have only noticed one earthquake, as a child of 10 years, when I was living in Indonesia. I was at school and the ground just started to wobble. It was very weird! There was no damage as it was a minor quake.

During two separate trips to Japan there were mild quakes, but I didn't feel either for some reason. In fact the time I met you, Yoshi, there was a tremor earlier that morning while I was having my breakfast at the hotel. I did not notice anything, but on my way back to my room in the lift I met some other guests who did feel it in their rooms, so it seems you had to be several floors up to get a sense of what was happening.

I hear that around a third of all the buildings in Christchurch have eithe collapsed or will have to be demolished and most others will need to have varying degrees of repairs. The death toll is likely to reach around 400 and of course many more have been hurt.

Earthquakes are a natural phenomenon and there will be many more big ones to come. I'm thinking of the huge disasters in Pakistan and Haiti where tens of thousands died, too.
