  • Canon out of Focus in last minute shocker?

I have it on very good authority that Canon has withdrawn from the Focus on Imaging show that starts on Sunday week at the Birmingham NEC.

Canon has traditionally run one of the biggest stands at Focus and the news comes just two weeks before the start of the event.

I'm hoping that Canon's press people can clarify the situation and will update this thread as and when.

I've just looked on the Focus site, they are no longer in the Exhibitor list. Any idea of the reason why??

I have just come off the phone from Canon's PR office and they confirm that as a result of an on-going marketing review Canon UK had to cancel their plans to exhibit at Focus at this very late stage.

I could not extract any more reasoning behind the decision than that. Obvious speculation could include recession-related issues, budgetary issues, etc. But Canon is not going to say what triggered the decision.

Canon has recently launched a number new cameras, including the EOS-1100D and the EOS-600D, which are likely to have been very high on the lists of show visitors to see.

Canon large format printers will be at the show via an independent company that handles this side of Canon's business in the UK.

I can only think that cancelling so close to the show must have meant that severe pressures within Canon UK were at play. I would be surprised if this decision wasn't without peripheral costs as much of the planning for the show would have been completed by now.

Knowing what the NEC is like I imagine they will still have to pay for the stand pulling at this late stage, it all appears very odd to me.

I would think it's more a case of the exhibition organiser who rent the space from the NEC that stand to loose money. Canon will also have a stand designer and builder who will have already invested considerable amounts of effort and money loosing out also

Well yes it will be the organizers, but there will be a contract none the less so penalty clauses could cut it. The designer of the stand will have done his/her work so that bill is unavoidable, hotels will keep deposits. In the scale of things what Canon can save in money at this stage is relatively small, but the potential loss particularly concerning new model launches could be massive.
It just does not make sense, and every one will think the worst I'm afraid which could cost even more.
Bad decision all round I think.
