David has been in touch to fill in the gaps:

"This was photographed in Shenyang, N.E. China, on 4th December 2009. The pink hue is a result of pollution from the thousands of communal heating coal-fired boilers burning throughout the city from November to March. Think London early 20th century.

It's the 9th most polluted city in the world apparently (and unfortunately).

The "industrial" background is more of the constant oblong tower blocks to house a mixture of people, shops and offices: bereft of any architectual artistry or imagination.
