  • Cokin has gone bust?

But all is not lost - apparently the business is in administration but is not about to be wound up, instead there is a management buyout on the cards.

I can see that the demand for many types of effects filters may have dwindled since the rise in popularity of digital cameras, but I for one now use certain filters more than ever, like graduated NDs, for example.

That's a shame, the buy out will probably end up with a lot of rationalization and reduce the number of filters offered. As you mention NDs and graduated NDs are probably the most popular these days.

i'm sure that the gradated layers on Lightroom has taken its toll on them, especially when working against a clock.

Not wishing to even attempt to teach grandma to suck eggs, I'd just point out to everyone else that the while the Lightroom graduated filter is very useful, but in difficult lighting it won't achieve what a real graduated ND can to reduce the actual exposure of a bright sky relative to the rest of the frame.

not tried that one before... but my take on filters in my work is that it is a choice that you have to live with whereas the post route is not. many shooters that i know have cut the number of filters that they carry way down. personally i went from a filter wallet of eight with CR's, close-ups, etc. to a single B+W four point star.

I would agree John, though the only filters I have bought in the last few years has been some Lee ND Grads, which as Ian suggests can do a better job that Lightroom, but I do use its grad filters all the time

honestly i'm not arguing against using filters, i would MUCH rather get the result on the neg (digital neg) than to try to post it in. however i Feel that digital capture is a game changer. back in the day, we knew that NPS was better choice for rich colors than VPS. however, NPS couldn't deal with Softar 1
diffusion. VPS made beautiful soft portraits while the Fuji just didn't get it. i could hold a roll of processed NPS up across the room and you could tell which frame was diffused. digital has some of that resemblance where it just doesn't make it with certain conditions. use of a UV/Skylight filter on various wide angle lenses will degrade sharpness at the edges. i've done it on a 24-70L. not really noticeable unless it's a group of a hundred people.

so may not want to hear this but i can't justify placing a cheap filter in front an expensive precision lens.

the use of a filter need to be studied with each new lens or camera. results may vary.
